I want to make something nice for our dinner party tomorrow night. But it must be really quick and simple. I fancy doing something with fruit but not a pie or crumble (because we're having pastry in the first course). Not pears poached in wine because the main course is beef in chianti.

Am all ears, all you foodies out there ...

Saw Jamie do this on telly so amounts are v vague ...
lots of different fruits - plums, strawberries, figs whatever, cut in half or leave whole if smallish. put in oven dish. Whizz up a vanilla pod with some sugar (I just use granulated) and sprinkle over fruit. Bake for 40 mins ish. Lots of sugar left over (I sort of add more sugar till whizzed stuff nice and speckly, not woody looking) so v easy to repeat as quick pud whenever. Yummy with marscarpone mixed with bit of vanilla sugar.

dunnow about fruit puddings, but how about

chocolate mousse

I've made this a couple of times and it's really really easy, and tastes lovely.

lso, as you make it in advance you just have to bring out the dessert when the time comes so no need to be busy in the kitchen.

I've made a lemon syllabub before now that's lovely (not that exact recipe, but very similar).

Variation on the Jamie one:
halve peaches, plums and/or nectarines, put cut side up in oven dish, dot with butter, sprinkle with sugar (I never bother with vanilla but you could), bake for about half an hour. Serve with cream, mascarpone, yoghurt etc as you like.
(leftovers also great cold for breakfast on Sunday morning)

Pannetonne pudding (like bread and butter pudding but with pannetonne instead) served with cream. Delicious. I'll post the recipe in a mo.

Pannetone Pudding

1 loaf panettone, cut into 1-inch cubes
2 cups heavy cream
2 cups whole milk
4 whole eggs
4 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons grated orange zest
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Butter for the baking dish

Heat oven to 325° F.

Place the panettone in a large bowl. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream, milk, eggs, yolks, sugar, zest, and vanilla. Pour over the bread cubes. Let soak for 5 minutes, stirring gently 2 or 3 times. Pour the mixture into a buttered 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Bake for 60 to 70 minutes. Serve warm with lightly whipped cream

individual cheesecakes?, can do day before.

biscuit and butter
marcapone and icing sugar
summer fruits

make up in ramakins with muffin cases in so you can lift it all out

shape round edges with flat edge of knife if need be

(take out of fridge 2 hours before to let biscuit soften)

add fruit just before serving and icing sugar again to decorate

Sorry this is late coming - but many thanks for the gorgeous suggestions.

In the end, wouldn't you know, I had to buy the puddings ready made () because my DS had the tantrum to end all tantrums on Friday afternoon when I wanted to go out shopping and by the time it had all blown over it was too late to get the shopping done and be back in time to collect DD from her friend's house.

So that meant I had to do the shopping on Saturday morning and there wasn't time to do that, make the starters and main course, frantically tidy the pigsty we call our house AND make pudding.

Oh well, I have to accept the fact that I am just not a domestic goddess but those recipes look delish and I will def. try them when not so pushed for time.
