Random - Do you know how to prepare a mango without getting covered in slime ?

I thought this needed sharing with MN...

I used to peel the things (mess) then slice away at the outer bit whislt trying to grasp the slippery fruit etc (more mess), and then serve it on a plate (looks like little bits of horrible mess) etc.

But a few years ago in Mexico I saw how the locals did it and it was very clever...

Hold the mango vertically, make one cut all the way through just skimming the stone. Place the cut half you've just sliced off onto a cutting board, with the flesh towards you, and make a series of cuts just shy of the skin running from top to bottom about 15mm (fat finger width) wide. Spin it around and make similar cuts the other way (again, just shy of cutting the skin). Then you grab your half mango, and kind of turn it inside out ! Ta da ! funny little squares of delicious mango are presented for one's gob and one is not covered in goo. It is quite pretty.

ahem

nice try but nigella has already taught me how to do this

LadyTophamHatt · 23/11/2006 14:49

OMG, me and DH both tried to "prepare" a mango once.

The entire kitchen was covered in orange slime...and so were we.
It was hilarious and none of us got to eat a single bit!!

hub2dee · 23/11/2006 14:56

I don't read any of dw's cooking books, so this is not nicked off Nigella, promise, LOL. Cooking books just sit like prizes on the shelf don't they...

HTH - try this and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how sterile the whole operation is.

I learned this from SIL. We call it a mango hedgehog.

hub2dee · 23/11/2006 15:03

'Mango hedgehog' is an excellent description, and would help make mango fun for kids, if you're one of those people who likes making food fun for kids.

Doesn't everyone do it that way? [surprised emoticon]

I was once told that there were only two ways to prepare a mango -- that one or taking all your clothes off and eating it in the bath. Which might be fun under the right circumstances but is impractical for a dinner party unless you have a very large bath and very broadminded guests...

thankyoupoppet · 23/11/2006 15:12

bloody good question op!

maxwellsmum · 23/11/2006 15:21

Thanks hub2dee i spend ages fighting with a mango to end up with orange stringy stuff all over the kitchen... I'll try this next time!

hub2dee · 23/11/2006 15:31

Yay ! I have saved someone !

Try it. You will be amazed.

Wot?? Don't you all have one of these?

(No, nor me. )

motherinferior · 23/11/2006 16:44

Surely part of the whole sensuous joy of the mango (top fruit that it is) is the, you know, mingling bodily fluids bit of it?

oxocube · 23/11/2006 16:50

Bless, will try that. Mango is ds's fave fruit but I am always put off from buying it because of the mess and slime. more ends up on me than in ds!!

TinyGang · 23/11/2006 16:57

The photo of that mango looks a bit er...how can I say this..um well fanjo-esque Sorry!

suedonim · 23/11/2006 17:04

TG! If that's the case, most of us on MN will have one!!

lorina · 23/11/2006 19:29

Eat them while you are laying in the bath

hub2dee · 24/11/2006 11:49

I think more people need to be exposed to this (not so) miraculous discovery.

It's not always practical to eat them in the bath, ya know !

I bought a mango splitter from Lakeland. Definitely worth the money. Mangoes can be quite expensive but they are full of vitamin A which is great for eye sight.

JackieNo · 24/11/2006 12:05

I do it the hedgehog way, but still manage to get covered in slime.

JackieNo · 24/11/2006 12:06

(that sounds a bit rude now I read it back - sorry!)

hub2dee · 24/11/2006 13:26

I've heard about girls like you.

.

(Haven't been called a 'girl' in ages, Hub, so will take that bit of your comment as a compliment and ignore the rest)
