Yum - scratch and dumplings, my favourite

Carmenere · 21/11/2006 22:51

Emkana it won't really be good enough unless you go out to the farm and kill the free range organic dumplings your self y'know?

marthamoo · 21/11/2006 22:52

Well, you need 300 chicken vaginas...sorry cloakas. Then you blend them with a couple of brain lickers and add sixteen cheesestrings. Coat in sherbet and deep fry in lard for twenty minutes.

Chuffin' gorgeous.

tribpot · 21/11/2006 22:53

Waitrose.

emkana · 21/11/2006 23:02

Look! I was serious here!
How do you make dumplings?
(Waitrose too posh for me - can I buy organic dumplings in Asda? )

Darling, just go to Waitrose, you can shoplift, tell them I sent you But in fairness, if dumplings are to be attempted, should they not be done from scratch?

Carmenere · 21/11/2006 23:07

They are a mixture of flour, fat, herbs and baking powder mixed up with some water and then lobbed into your stew and cooked in the liquid - I think but I would google if I were you as we don't have them in Ireland and I have never actually made them.

beckybrastraps · 21/11/2006 23:10

6oz SR flour
3oz suet
saly, pepper, water to bind.

Of course, suet is a tricky one. What is the provenance if using beef suet? Organic? And veggie suet presumably contains hydrogenated fats....

Of course, you could probably buy 'proper' suet from a butchers and grate it yourself....

beckybrastraps · 21/11/2006 23:11

That's salt BTW, not saly

And yes, herbs do make them more tasty. Or very finely chpped mushrooms.

beckybrastraps · 21/11/2006 23:12

And it must be self raising flour (or add baking powder). Or you will break your teeth.

emkana · 22/11/2006 23:01

Thanks becky.

Couldn't face it today (we had Lasagne instead, mostly homemade )

but maybe tomorrow - so I need to know: what is suet and where can I buy it?

cece · 22/11/2006 23:03

suet is available from supermarkets. It is hard fat that has been grated. Usually beef

ilovecaboose · 22/11/2006 23:03

any supermarket for the dried packet stuff. Can get meat or vege.

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 23:07

I made horrid ones yesterday. Advice I received was to make them very small (ping pong ball) following the packet recipe, and put casserole in the oven to avoid sogginess.

Gingerbear · 22/11/2006 23:07

i.e advice to avoid repeat performance

cece · 22/11/2006 23:08

I make my stew on the top of cooker in a large saucepan with lid and pop the dumplings in on the top for the last 20-30 mins. Yes ping pong ball size is good. You can make more. It is half fat to flour. I always make 8 oz of flour and 4 oz of suet.
