High fat food ideas for dairy intolerant toddler

DS is 15 months and really cutting back on bf which I had relied on for calcium and fat. He is dairy and gluten free, and I prefer not to give him soya yoghurts etc (he won't eat them anyway tbh) He doesn't really love the coconut yoghurt either bbut I can get him to eat about a tablespoons worth on fruit after dinner. He used to eat about half an avocado a day but I think he's getting bored of that as he doesn't seem to be enjoying it so much these days. He has hummous a few days a week for lunch. Re milk, he won't drink special formula, Koko or Almond milk from a cup, and unless I really have to I don't want to start expressing at this stage.

Any other ideas? His weight gain has been pretty much non existent for a couple of months coinciding with walking and cutting back on the bf, no one seems at all worried but I can't help it! He does eat pretty well and is thriving but I'm very conscious of their need for fat and calcium.

As a dairy free child I was able to have goats milk. Is that possible for your ds?

Goats milk makes the yummiest white sauce/cheese sauce imaginable (to the extent I sometimes choose to use it rather than cows milk for savoury dishes). Cauliflower cheese using gluten free flour for the sauce might be an option?

There's always df, gf, wf chocolate Smile

My MIL makes something similar with jelly where she makes a raspberry jelly and instead of using the half pint of cold milk, she whisks in evaporated milk. Can't see why you couldn't whisk in a milk or cream alternative.

As for the bfing, it doesn't matter how often he feeds as at this age your supply will be well established. If he feeds twice or ten times, he should still get the same amount Smile

And there is Df cheese sauce here. It's low fat though so you might want to add olive oil to the meal as a pop suggested Smile

I'd really recommend seeing a dietician. We see one for my daughter who has just turned one and she's been a massive help.

Apparently, in terms of calcium, the amount of calcium needed is reduced significantly when they turn one. I stopped BFing at 10 months (well my DD refused BF) but she wouldn't take any other milk to drink. I saw my dietician this morning as part of her follow up and she said when they turn one just two slices of hovis best of both bread provides enough calcium. Obviously you can't account for crusts not eaten etc so you can give more calcium and of course there's the issue of how much they absorb but I found this a bit of a revelation.

In terms of fat my DD is gaining weight but I was told when they are so young not to rely on fruit for puddings and snacks as it's not calorie dense.

She suggested nut butters on the best of both bread. I also make up batches of Annabel karmels fruit custard which is basically stewed fruit (Apple and pear/plum and apple) and mix it with custard (birds custard made with oat milk) She also has rice pudding made with coconut milk. I started giving her these bits every pudding and she's really putting on weight.

I saw the dietician today and she also suggested making flapjack using dairy free butter and adding raisins and some kind of seeds like linseeds. Also ready brek which is brilliant as fortified, made with oat milk and adding coco powder to make a choc pudding.

Our dieticians also do telephone appointments which I have used before and found invaluable.

DD doesn't drink anything other than water now and that's fine apparently.

Hope this helps xx

Oh should say Ella from deliciously Ella does some great vegan food including some flapjack made from bananas and oats and maple syrup. My DD has egg allergy too and found an amazing cookbook By Ms Cupcake called the naughtiest cupcakes in town which is fab. I did 8 months of vegan eating when I was BFing after realising and the cakes in this book are divine. (Some online are hideous!!) Great for a fat boosting sweet treat! We made the christening cake with the Victoria sponge in this book so we could both eat it and it got a big thumbs up!

Will he eat/drink smoothies. Cashews are wonderful added to smoothies. They create a really creamy texture
