can anyone give me some fresh inspiration, ideally with links to recipes, or suggestions for decent books?

My only restrictions are no slow cooker stuff, no risottos, no mushrooms (sadly), only tinned tomatoes (not fresh), no aubergines/pumpkins/squash.

we're not veggie, no allergies, and TBH the DC aren't especially fussy so this should be easy, but I'm totally in a rut. Would especially love more fish/seafood ideas. Please help, before we die of burrito-related boredom.

wow - thanks all
didn't get chance to check back on the thread, but these ideas look really promising
I'm going to have a proper read tonight before finalising tomorrow's Sainsbury's order, so we can try something new over the weekend.

A fail safe salmon dish: make a marinade of juice from 1 lime, 1 tsp of fennel seeds, chilli flakes (to taste), 2 cloves of crushed garlic, 1 tsp of thyme leaves and 1 tbs of brown sugar. Bash it all up in a pestle and mortar then pour over 2 salmon fillets. Marinade for half an hour, or longer, then bake in the oven.

Serve with green beans. Boil beans until just cooked then cool down in cold water and dry. Fry up sesame oil, sesame seeds and ginger together then lob in the cooked beans and fry off for a couple of minutes. Turn off the hob add some soy sauce to taste. It's sooooo good!

Mary Berrys fish pie. Boring I know.

bigkidsdidit · 16/07/2015 21:37

Mary berry's pie is delicious! And the one with bread cubes on top is easy too. I love that, might make it tomorrow :)

Pantone363 · 16/07/2015 22:07

I don't do the bread as DC don't like it. Mash is fine except DD doesn't like the texture so just eats the fish Hmm

We like salmon baked in foil with slivers of red pepper, chilli, grated ginger, spring onion and soy sauce. Serve with baby new potatoes and sugar snaps

Or white fish (we like hake) baked in foil with lemon, thyme, salt pepper and tiny dab of butter. Sometimes I buy M&S fresh hollansdaise and add some of that to each foil parcel a couple of minutes before they are done. We love this with fennel gratin - slice a bulb of fennel and put in small oven proof dish. Add about 200ml good chicken stock and cover with foil. Bake for about 15 / 20 mins to soften the fennel. Whizz up a couple of slices of bread, add parsley, salt, pepper and grated parmesan. Take foil off dish scatter over crumbs and bake till crispy and golden - lick the plate clean dinner!

We also love fish pie and I often make the Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food one as it is very quick.

Crab pasta

salmon fish cakes

Prawn stirfry

and I really love smoked haddock - we usually use it in risotto, or fish cakes but I am going to try the recipe up the thread with the base of spinach and the cheesy crumbs mmmm

thanks again for all the suggestions. I am going to work my way through lots of them - something new each saturday

We did do the fish baps today (although I added some panko) and it was clean plates all round. I've also picked up Jamie's 30 minute meals from the library, and reserved 15 minute meals too, so we've got some more inspiration to come Smile.

"Lazy Satay" courtesy of my DSIS cook some diced chicken or turkey (I throw in chickpeas and whatever veg I fancy, last night it was carrots and baby sweet corn) add 2 tbsp of peanut butter and 2 tbsp of sweet chilli sauce, cook through and serve with rice or cous cous

Xod baked with basil, mozzarella and cherry tomatoes (which just turn into sauce) is really quick easy and super tasty:

all in one baked salmon & veg

Put salmon fillets (skin side down) in centre of oven dish. Season with salt and pepper. Pile halved cherry tomatoes down one side of the dish, and fine green beans down the other side. Bake at 180 for 25 minutes.

Just to share our top, simple foods:
rice with fried egg and tomatoes
pasta with chorizo and grated cheese (god we love chorizo)
oatmeal/grated potato pancakes with sour cream (and smoked salmon if available)
pulled pork (Aldi brand) with rice
White frozen fish fillet in tomato/onion sauce
Omlette with variety of bits thrown in
Boiled potatoes with boiled frankfurters

I like getting the Sainsburys magazines for new ideas and also my most used supper meals cookbook is the Fay Ripley one, we are having one of her pork dishes tonight with noodles

Depending on the age of your children, the baby led weaning cookbook is brilliant for family friendly recipes - way beyond weaning age. We've had lamb burgers and goulash from it this week, and lamb tagine and meatballs last week :)
