How about a lobster bake party?

These are yummy! A friend did one for me when i went to visit in Maine last autumn, and its great fun sharing/finger/sticky yum mess way to eat them. Totally indulgent.

Traditional requires a pit in the sand, but a jolly big pot works just as well.

Let me know if you want the recipe - i bought a mini lobster cookbook thingie while i was there and it has some good recipes. I can post if you like.

Ok!

Maine Lobster Bake

Ingredients

Salted Water
Lobsters (one each, but i think ok to share one between 2 if lots of other ingredients)
Ear of corn for each person
2 large red potatoes for each person
Seaweed (shredded cabbage will do just as well)
Big big pot

Pour water into pot (about 6 cups or so) and line with 2 inches of seaweed/cabbage.

Wash potatoes but dont peel - cut into quarters and pop in pot.

Add a layer of seaweed/cabbage.

Pop in lobsters.

Remove husks from ears of corn and any silky threads, chop in half if you want, but whole is ok too. Put those in gently ontop of the lobsters.

Cover with several inches of seaweed/cabbage.

Put lid on.

Steam for 30 minutes.

I was taught that the traditional way to eat these is with the pot being at the centre of the table/floor and everyone delving in, helping themselves to bits.

Clams are also a important part of this recipe. If you have them, or can get them, scrub the beard part off, wrap them in a baby muslin cloth, with enough room to open, and pop them in on the top layer, over the corn. If you cant get clams, i think that mussels would work well too.

Heres a boozyish hotish pasta sauce recipe too..

Lobster meat from 2 lobsters
1/4 cup chopped carrots
1/4 cup chopped celery
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup brandy
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/2 cups vegetable stock
1/2 cup dry vermouth
Tin chopped italian tomatoes
1 teaspoon tarragon
1 crushed clove of garlic
1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
5 drops tabasco
2 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons skimmed milk
2 tablespoons tomato paste
dry spaghetti for 4

Chop meat from lobster and empty out the shells.

Saute empty lobster shells, carrots, celery, onion, brandy in olive oil for 5 minutes or so.

Add stock, vermouth, tomatoes, tarragon, garlic, pepper and pepper sauce (tabasco).

Simmer for 30 minutes.

Sieve sauce into another saucepan, pressing the juices out of all the ingredients.

Reduce by rapidly boiling down to make about 2 cups of sauce, then remove from the heat.

Combine flour, milk and tomato paste.

Whisk into the sauce, then stir in the lobster meat.

Return to heat and simmer for 3 minutes.

Add seasoning if you wish.

Boil pasta - pour sauce over pasta.

Eat.

Crusty bread for dipping would also be nice.
