was going to share last night's leftovers with ds for lunch - beef goulash and rice - but have in mind there's some risk about reheating rice

yes I don't know why but I would never reheat rice!

poppynic · 15/11/2006 12:42

I was going to reheat my rice dish for tea without thinking - but now you mention it .... dp has a problem with reheating rice... help needed here too, I don't want to have to cook again.

sweetheart · 15/11/2006 12:42

Actually I think it's reheat it twice?!?!?!!

I cook rice and then freeze it for ds and defrost it in the microwave.

Ummm perhaps someone else should coment as I don't really know!

lulumama · 15/11/2006 12:43

can lead to virulent food poisoning if not reheated carefully......i NEVER reheat rice and i am fairly laidback about this sort of thing.....sorry...i;d cook some more fresh.....

Tutter · 15/11/2006 12:44

ah

well, given that ds is recovering from a v&d bug and i'm newly pg, looks like it's egg sandwiches instead

From the Food Standard Agency

I've heard that reheating rice can cause food poisoning. Is this true?
It's true that you could get food poisoning from eating reheated rice. But it's not actually the reheating that's the problem ? it's the way the rice has been stored before reheating.

Uncooked rice can contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can cause food poisoning. When the rice is cooked, the spores can survive. Then, if the rice is left standing at room temperature, the spores will germinate into bacteria. These bacteria will multiply and may produce toxins (poisons) that cause vomiting or diarrhoea. Reheating the rice won't get rid of these toxins.

So, the longer cooked rice is left at room temperature, the more likely it is that bacteria, or the toxins they produce, could stop the rice being safe to eat.

It's best to serve rice when it has just been cooked. If that isn't possible, cool the rice as quickly as possible (ideally within one hour) and keep it in the fridge for no more than one day until reheating.

Remember that when you reheat any food, you should always check that it's piping hot all the way through, and avoid reheating more than once.

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 15/11/2006 12:44

You can buy gruesome ready meals with frozen cooked rice in them though?

lulumama · 15/11/2006 12:45

sorry...but better safe than sorry, esp. for you and if LO been poorly....xx

lulumama · 15/11/2006 12:45

maybe i am a bit overcautious then!!

PinkTinsel · 15/11/2006 12:47

to do fried rice your supposed to use day old rice so it can't be that bad, have done it a few times myself

Tutter · 15/11/2006 12:48

i think i'll heed your advice anyway lulumama

will give it to dh instead for dinner

poppynic · 15/11/2006 12:49

Hmmm, paella was left out 3 hours before going in fridge - I'm pg - would you reheat?

CountessDracula · 15/11/2006 12:50

Well I am fairly lax about these things but rice is my one exception I will only eat it when just cooked

I won't ever eat rice salads eiher

KathyMCMLXXII · 15/11/2006 12:53

DH and I got horrible gastric flu from rice in a Thai restaurant so ever since then we have been cautious and basically done what the FSA says - cool the rice as quickly as possible.
We do freeze rice-based things (esp. risotto) for dd but would be inclined to avoid keeping it more than a day in the fridge.

I don't think it's going to kill you, it just could be quite unpleasant, so it's a case of being cautious but keeping it in perspective.
