Supermarket Champagne - do you buy it/rate it?

Read a few days ago that experts including Egon Ronay did a blind taste test of supermarket champagnes, and said they compared favourably to the more expensive stuff.
Here are the ones they particularly liked:

Marks & Spencer Champagne de St Gail Premier Cru Brut £14.99
Sainsbury's Vintage 1999 Blanc de Blanc Brut £17.99
Sainsbury's Blanc de Noirs Brut £13.99
Sainsbury's Champagne Rose £16.29

Anyone tried them? Any other tips about good, well priced wine/champagne? This is important information we all need given the fast approaching holiday season with all the accompanying festivities!

I've had the two sainsburys ones that aren't rose, and I would say they were decent tbh. Perfectly acceptable champagnes.

A Tesco one won a prestigious award last year.

Earlybird · 08/11/2006 11:52

dad and expat - do you remember which ones?

I was surprised not to see any from Waitrose or Tesco on the list....

I meant the two Sainsburys ones on your list.

Perfectly nice, and I can be a bit fussy - I don't like cava, or other sparkling wines much.

Tutter · 08/11/2006 11:55

the m&s oudinot one is nice for those occasions when you don't want to spend £££s

liath · 08/11/2006 11:57

I've had the Sainsbury's non rose ones too, very nice.

TBH we tend to go for Jacobs Creek sparking pinot noir/chardonnay - it's much cheaper and tastes fab.

lucycat · 08/11/2006 11:58

Haven't the Aldi champagnes come out really well in a recent test?

not tried them personally so can't recommend either way though - sorry!

lorina · 08/11/2006 12:08

last christmas we tried a couple of the cheap ones in sains, not their own brand just ones on offer for about £12,and they were excellent. Went back and stocked up on the one we really liked.

In this months Goodhousekeeping they reckon Morrisons have a really good one for abot £12 so I will try that next time I"m on that side of town

We were given a bottle of Waitrose champers that was really nice. I also bought some Sainsburys Cava (sparkling and usually in the champagne section) and that was OK, quite a nice alternative to champagne. Though maybe at £3.99 a bottle I was swayed by the price!

Earlybird: there's only 1 Tesco's one. It's about £12 a bottle, and very nice.

pointydog · 08/11/2006 17:35

It all tastes lovely to me. Make happiness cost less and keep your palate unrefined.

mancmum · 08/11/2006 17:41

just heard malcolm gluck (cheap plonk) rave about supermarket champagne saying it was better than Moet etc.. (he actually used words like complex, interesting, exciting, but I think he meant they taste nice!) Waitrose and Tesco he mentioned

Earlybird · 08/11/2006 21:45

Would you feel comfortable taking supermarket champagne to someone's house as a gift? Somehow, even if it tastes great I'd feel self conscious - which is ridiculous if the taste is what matters..

clos de monostriol cava (thanks bossykate)
if you're going to go cheap this is the way forward

Earlybird · 08/11/2006 21:49

sophable - where can you buy that one?

kikidee · 08/11/2006 21:51

M&S Oudinot Rose and Sainsburys Rose are both good but Sainsburys generally cheaper.

Heathcliffscathy · 08/11/2006 21:53

sainsburys, waitrose

it's about 9 quid normally, but they do do offers on it which is when i run in a snap it up (£4.50)

better than most NV champagnes although i agree that if you are going one up price wise best bet is supermarket vintage.

obviously if you can afford it then pol roger and bollinger special cuvees....

kickassangel · 08/11/2006 22:05

i love the tesco own brand brut (£14). they also do half bottles (only £8), and 1/3 bottle (pointless).
it's what i have if dh goes out for a night. better than a take away.
