Paneer. WTF?! Is there a way to make this stuff edible?

For some reason, whilst in the cheese section of the supermarket I bought paneer. Not just one pack but two Confused !

I have come home and googled what to do with it thinking yum I love cheese. Read that you can cook with it and that its a tasty snack and some people like to keep it in the fridge and nibble on chunks.

Upon opening I have discovered it was the precursor to polystyrene. Completely devoid of any flavour and as tempting for snack purposes as eating the plastic wrapping it came in.

Can it actually be turned into something delicious or have I just been conned by pretend cheese? Angry

Put it in a curry.

IvyWall · 07/05/2015 20:12

We use it in saag paneer when we have curry

Mutter Paneer, it's delicious.

This is my favourite paneer recipe. Do less chillis though!

Paneer pakora. Yummy.

Delicious in Indian food but you need a proper recipe. Saag paneer (spinach) and mattar paneer (with peas) are the ones I know. Madhur jaffrey's recipes are good but I'm sure there'll be loads if you google.

Wouldn't eat it on its own as a snack, but it is delicious in curry!

Hoppinggreen · 07/05/2015 20:33

Cut into pieces, Coat it in spices and fry, then snack on it.
I love it

Wow thanks everyone. I'll look through and give it a go!

on its own it like chewing floor.

I think my favourite is sweet chilli paneer but i've only ever had it successfully in indian restaurants.

Amazing in curry

bilbodog · 09/05/2015 15:01

try frying cubes in oil and then tossing in sesame seeds and adding it to salads a bit like you might cubes of Haloumi. It frys well because it doesn't melt and go soft.

MaraThonbar · 09/05/2015 23:32

Oh, don't eat it raw - it's awful. Lots of good ideas here. Crucial to fry it.

I fry cubes of it in turmeric before adding to a curry of peas and tomatoes (mutter paneer curry). Just frying it in turmeric sweetens it and makes it delicious even without the curry.
