Packed lunch for 11yr old DS - what do you think?

Apologies of this is in the wrong subject.

I just wanted to ask opinion on the pack lunch I'm sending my ds to school with. I'm not sure it's broad enough and worried it may be too high in sugar.

Today he has
Chicken salad (grilled chicken breast, spinach, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, sweet corn, grated carrot & red/green/yellow pepper)
A smoothie & a bottle of water
A low fat fruit yoghurt
An orange

I felt a bit happier with his soup/bagel/fruit combination that he insisted on over the winter and although he is a bit pudgy we are not actively trying to get him to lose weight (I'm sure the next growth spurt will see that off). Is this enough to sustain a tall 11yr old boy through the day? Should I be adding some kind of carb?

Any suggestions welcome Flowers

Low fat yogurt will probably have a lot of sugar in it & smoothies can be high in calaories.

I'd replace one of them with a wholemeal carb, like a roll or some brown rice in the salad.

Wow that is healthy. Does he manage to peel and eat an orange without a right mess? Mine wouldn't.

Is there a reason you don't do a bread-based sandwich - I only ask as my son doesn't like sandwiches so it is usually breadsticks and humus as the basic meal.

Thanks for the replies.

Magi- that's a great idea. I'll give a wholemeal carb with it tomorrow.

Dancing - he loves it. He came home both days asking for it again for dinner. He does have a snack whilst doing homework (usually veg and dip occasionally a bowl of cereal). For breakfast he tends to have a toasted bagel with either jam or chocolate spread with teak yuck or smoothie. Not the greatest but I let it slide as lunch & dinner tend to be healthy. I do alternate between oranges/bananas/grapes. He is allergic to a lot of fruit raw so he is limited for choice. The smoothie is a fruit only smoothie which is why I pop in a yoghurt for dairy.

Pink - I score the Orange in a circle around the top and cut a small triangle of peel away above the pith so he can get his finger in. The only reason I don't do sandwiches is because he got bored of them and wanted something hot but not school dinners which started the soup and bagel. He didn't want to have sandwiches once the weather had warmed up and he asked for salad although he did love breadsticks, crudités and dip and the occasional pasta salad.

Thanks for the reassurance that it is essentially healthy. I will add a wholemeal carb to make it a bit more substantial and look for better yoghurts though. Smile

  • tea, juice or smoothie. Not teak yuck or smoothie.

I also have a tall 11 yr old DS whose lunch looks like this: wholemeal pitta or brown bread sandwich with turkey/ chicken/cream cheese and mixed salad incl. lettuce, peppers, cucumber, a small homemade something like flapjack or brownie, banana and water. He eats lunch at 10:50am (massive American school) and so is starving when he comes home from school at 4. He has a snack of unsalted, non oily popcorn, or granola bar and apple at about 2pm. He was beginning to put weight on his tummy, but three hours of footie practice a week has seen that off. He's always pretty hungry though!
