have just overcome my scepticism to prepare a spag bol with this instead of tomatoes

it wasn't actually as bad as I was anticipating at all. Needed fiddling about a bit with drops of lemon juice, worcester sauce and wine (saviour of ingredients)

but altogether a pleasant surprise. Even the kids ate it.

brilliant!! DS gets all itchy with tomatoes and I've been really struggling. I'll try making that sauce later - thanks

iris I don't know if you know but tomatoes are part of the nightshade family which has potatoes, peppers and aubergines in it too

so it might be worth watching him to see if he reacts to those ever

Thanks - yes I knew - he does (...and dairy and berries and dried fruit and grapes and sesame seeds )

so I'm very grateful for the recipe

my fil is jamaican & he provides fab non-potato carb recipes

you tried yam? or cornmeal is good alternative to mash

That sounds good!

iris66 · 02/11/2006 20:25

Cappuccino - I've never seen a yam before or is it another name for sweet potato? (sorry if I'm being totally thick) We do eat tons of those.
We do polenta but it's just not the same without the cheese and I'm having trouble sourcing ingredients to make "non-cheese cheese" at the mo. What else do you put with it?

Cappuccino · 02/11/2006 20:59

looks like this

it's white inside, a bit like a potato - in-laws serve it in slices

as for the polenta, usually do spring onions or something sauteed to add to it; plus fresh herbs, bit of paprika (and parmesan but obv you can't)

one thing I do really enjoy is roast veg - carrot, butternut squash, sweet potato, red onion - I used to do this with tomatoes and peppers etc and really missed it

I'm probably telling you 100 things you already know

thanks I seem to have got a mental block as we used to eat tomatoes daily so it's lovely to hear about different things to eat.

WhoooooshICouldGiveUpWork · 03/11/2006 22:23

Dd is allergic/intolerant of onions (and all onion family) as well as tomatoes which makes cooking really easy!

crayon · 04/11/2006 14:15

Iris and WhoooooshICouldGiveUpWork - have you had your children tested for allergies, or do you just know from trial and error?

DS2 also has a nightshade intollerance and cooking is a nightmare. He suddenly is able to eat some fish which he hasn't in the past, but haven't tested tomato recently. I just wish I could find a way of testing his intollerances properly.

PS: have you tried the 'Nomato' range? some healthfood shops stock it or can order it

WhoooooshICouldGiveUpWork · 06/11/2006 17:30

No Crayon-haven't had dd tested, just found out by trial and error. To be honest, onions are the absolute worst-she ends up in agony and her stomach swells hugely.
Am seriosuly thinking of having her tested though as she does seem to be intolerant of a few things...
