Too much sugar in pumpkin soup! Can I rescue it?

I have a recipe for pumpkin soup which lists sugar as one of the ingredients. I was a bit surprised but thought it was maybe one of those things, like tomatoes, which improve with sugar. Well, its too sweet and having looked at pesha's pumpkin soup thread there's no mention of feckin' sugar in any of those recipes! Is there anything I can do about it now?

My chef DH says he would put chili powder in it - so it would be hot and sweet. Maybe a tad more salt too.

I would put in some salt, some black pepper and the juice of half a lemon, and then probably add something with a "drying" flavour like potato or red lentils.

PMSL Californiafirework, I think the onions might put a dampener on that one. I had thought about lemon juice actually so may try that with more seasoning. Thank you all!
