Basic tiffin
4oz butter
2tbs sugar
2tbs golden syrup or maple syrup or syrup from ginger jar
4 heapy tsp cocoa powder
melt gently in big saucepan
remove from heat
add 8oz broken biscuits
2 handfuls of bits, currants, cherries, mixed peel, nuts...whatever
tip into 8inch square tin, when cool top with 8oz of melted chocolate (any colour you fancy)

I think a lot depends on the biscuits you use. I like making it with ginger nuts.

soup sure does make a difference, we used custard creams once. It was OTT (or maybe that was down to the marsh mallows)
last week I used cheap shortbreads and loads of walnuts, threw in a couple of tsp of instant coffee powder and it was yummy. Topped off with a mix of white and dark chocolate.

Oh yes - custard creams were superb!

I like cheap shortbread fingers. They make nice chunks, and glacee cherries.

Sounds delish penny

I think the quality of the chocolate is the key - always at least 70%.

SconessMcFloness · 31/03/2015 16:50

I make this I usually go for digestives or shortbread.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 31/03/2015 16:52

I like to use mix of dark and milk chocolate on the top (roughly 2:1 proportions). Remember to cut it up before the chocolate sets hard!

Malteser tiffin recipe on mumsnet is the best! Hobnobs or ginger nuts are good or if you're feeling really posh, amaretti. Dried fruit for a bit of chew.

Malteser tiffin recipe on mumsnet is the best!

I disagree. It was hugely disappointing and a compete waste of Maltesers. I nearly posted a warning in my first post not to bother with it :o

With the Malteser one, the best thing is not to mix in the Maltesers, but to put the mix in the tin, and the put them on top before covering with chocolate. If you mix them in, the heat takes off all their chocolate covering

TheSteveMilliband · 01/04/2015 14:28

Oh, who knew chocolate biscuit cake could be so controversial Wink
To be fair I usually don't have any maltesers and make it without. Love your idea of putting them on top though tb.

SoupDreggon · 01/04/2015 15:00

You may as well eat the entire packet of malteasers and have the tiffin without though. You get a better ratio of malteaser to tiffin then :o

SoupDreggon · 01/04/2015 15:01

Especially if you eat them in secret when the children are in bed.

TheSteveMilliband · 01/04/2015 19:17

Is there another way to eat maltesers?
