Wedding Cake

I am considering baking a three tier weding cake, as I could not believe just how expensive they are to buy. I am a reasonable baker. Can anyone suggest recipes for each tier but not fruit cake? I am going to decorate the cake using ready roll icing ribbon and fresh flowers.

M&S do plain white (and off white, I think) iced sponge and fruit cakes, of various sizes. We bought 3 cakes (small, med and large), and then decorated ourselves.
I'd think you'd need a Madeira sponge for stacking. Maybe chocolate, plain or lemon?

What kind of cake have you been looking for? We are getting married in December and having a 3 tier iced wedding cake with snowflake decoration that makes 60-90 portions. This is 170 pounds which I think is quite reasonable

What kind of flavours are you thinking of? Make sure you give yourself plenty of time if you are doing your own, they generally take several days and can't necessarily be done in advance unless you don't mind freezing them.
Have you iced cakes or stacked them before? It takes a fair bit of practice to get them smooth and level, so practice in advance if you haven't.
Also with the flowers, check that whatever flowers you plan on aren't toxic - the florist should know. If you want to insert any in the cake you will need posy pics to put the stems into.
There's generally a lot of skill and work in a wedding cake, that's why they cost a lot.

I will check out m and s. The quotes we have had for a three tier plain iced sponge cakewith ribbon has been over £200! We are not even in the south of zengland. The opposite in fact.

The M&S ones are about £5-£15 depending on size I serm to remember. I think Morrison's and Saino's go plain white iced cake layers too.

Bbc goodfood have one online- think it's lemon, carrot and something else.

That sounds reasonable to me (as a cake maker!), it's very time-consuming and skilled work.
But the m&s cakes are a good alternative, much less stressful than having to make your own would be.

We're considering the M&S ones, they do a good range of sizes/flavours and icings. They also do a range of cheaper 'cutting bars' so you can economise on smaller cakes and still have enough portions to serve. They allow you to have even more flavours too, including a gluten free option.
