Sainsbury's vs Tesco. Is Sainsburys REALLY more expensive?

I shop almost every day at Sainsburys. It seems expensive. Friends tell me it is expensive. I have just done a price comparison (with Tesco) on a few standard items and they are the same.

I would like to reduce my weekly grocery amount -I seem to spend a fortune on food shopping. It doesn't look like a change to Tescos is worth it. Right?

Can you give me your thoughts on the Sainsbury's alternatives and where any savings might be had. I also have a Morrisons opened up locally.... Are they much cheaper????

I am fed up of spending so much on apparently so little

Not sure if I can give you a definite answer but I shop at Sainsburys but will get some shopping from Tesco as I know it's cheaper. I believe Morrisons is cheaper, now and again I will do some shopping there too. Perhaps it depends on what you buy ie brand named stuff, types of food you eat etc

Thanks Curlylox - what do you find cheaper at Tescos??? I haven't found anything yet (online browsing only)

it depends what you buy. tescpo own brand is cheaper compared to sainsbury own brand but tesco basics is nicer than sainbury basic. tesco nappies and sainbos are much the same.

I don't know either, sorry! I prefer our local sainsburys store as tescos is gloomy and badly stocked but they don't do veggie fingers at Sains which I love. Also I find tescos always have online delivery slots available for the next day whereas you have to book quite a few days ahead for sainsburys. No help really, just rambling....

Have you tried that new website that works out the cheapest place for you (for internet orders)?
There was a thread on it recently - will try to find...

Go to Asda, Lidl, Netto, Aldi etc.

Curlylox · 29/10/2006 16:15

I agree with mumofmonsters. Such as Tesco own brand " * as good as leading brand" ie washing liquid for clothes, things to clean house with, prefer Tesco nappies to Sainsburys and for a long while formula milk was cheaper at Tesco but surprise surprise Sainsburys bought their price down. Not sure if this helps.

Asda for us is the cheapest supermarket, and the only one that wont deliver in our area yet!!

Went today for a lot of "cupboard" items and the total bill was £38

Ifi had done it online with Sainsburys it would have been about £55 with £5 delivery charge on top.

I am now menu planning a week in advance and only buying whats needed for the meals for the week rather than all the other "stuff" that seems to be gone in a day or 2.

I agree, if you have a lidl or aldi close by, they are worth their weight in gold for staple items.

Sainburys sometimes have price tickets that say 'we've reduced this item to match Tescos' Surely they'd be better off getting a name for it being 1p cheaper than tescos rather than just matching it? Personally I buy at sainsburys as I like their stuff.

Anyway - Do you have to shop everyday? thats boosting your prices as well. Maybe try planning your menus and only buy according once a week.

rustycreakingdoorbear · 29/10/2006 16:23

I usually got to Tesco's as it's on my way back from work, but I occasionally go to Sainsbury's & find I spend more because of impulse buys (they seem to have more interesting things, but I suspect that if I went there regularly I wouldn't think so iyswim)

aDadOnMumsnet · 29/10/2006 16:24

sainsburys is expensive, you're right, I'm always shocked.

Buy your staples and cupboardy things somewhere cheaper as suggested, and go to sainsburys for the quality things you want from there, or better still get meat and veg from somewhere that isn't a supermarket.

i find that if I go to the supermarket everyday it rockets my weekly food budget - since I have been doing once a fortnight shop has been a lot better.

FestivelyFoggyFloss · 23/12/2006 20:41

That site is very clever. Might have a go later. Love sainsburys, mainly because I feel tescos is taking over the world and quality is much better than asda and tesco. Also i find a lot of their fresh veg are reduced and then go on to last at home for ages.

divamumdiva · 23/12/2006 20:53

do my shoppin online, one week on asda, one week on tesco, things tesco have asda dont or things asda have tesco doesnt..
tesco nappies defo thunb up, asda meat seems better than tesco. and etc..
