been told by dietician to try making fishcakes for ds with just mashed potatoe and fresh cod, got the cod, cooked it, made mash, even made breadcrumbs out of his "everything" free bread, put it in frying pan and it basically fell apart andlooks a bloody mess,i cant give himthat for tea

cant use egg, any ideas how to keep the damn thing together, just put another one on

why don't you just mix it all up and fry it and give him cod hash with green veg?

7up · 28/10/2006 15:54

ive just made one! its still round but not broken, mind you he wont be able to hold it in his fingers or itl fall apart

i just triedthe "hash" one twig and its totally bland and tasteless but i cant add any flavourings.think il serve the decent one with a few baked beans to give it a bit of a taste

if the hash is bland and tasteless then I'd lay odds the fish cakes will be too .. sorry

can't you add any herbs? seasonings? .. got any parsley?

if you're making the hash why not throw in a tin of heinz baked beans into it

can he have white sauce / cheese sauce

sorry don't know what he's eliminating

I make fishcakes with mashed potato and poached fish. I'm not sure why yours are falling apart but could you cook them under a grill instead as they won't be moved around as much.

I add a little olive oil to the mash to make it a bit stickier and when I make the cakes I use my hands and apply a lot of pressure. Can your ds have flour? I coat mine in flour rather than breadcrumbs. I also use a little English mustard and chopped parsley to add flavour.

hes eating one !yippe smothered in baked beans.

his diet is severly restricted twig and now ive been toldto cut back on salt (temporarily hopefully) its even worse, never mind theres worseoff.

good news is that hes eating it. ive put theother 2 in the oven.

used to pay 89p for 4 yummy tasty ones from tesco. this has cost a fiver for 4 whole ones, 1 hashed one and one burnt one

Try using less mash and more fish. The trouble with using mash without any of the usual binders is that potato starch actually weakens when heated too much, so it doesn't hold together.

Can he have cheese? Grated cheese in the mix might help the fishball hold together. Or making them quie small (say ping-pong ball sized) might help. Can they be rolled in grated cheese and breadcrumbs before cooking?

PrettyCandles · 28/10/2006 16:20

It will also hold tegether better if allowed to cool before cutting/eating.

7up · 28/10/2006 16:20

no to cheese im afraid,il try more fish next time,i did wonder why they went soggy in the frying pan

hes eaten 2 now! the 2 in the oven look ok and still look round

7up · 28/10/2006 16:23

When you make them next time, they don't have to be fishcake shaped. They might be more resistant to breaking up if you make a smaller cylinder shape, or roll the mixture into balls. You can use other, cheaper, fish too (I actually think cod tastes vile anyway so would never buy it). It would be tasty with mackerel or salmon or some other oily fish. It must be tough dealing with multiple dietary restrictions.

7up · 29/10/2006 17:08

thanks bran, ididdo sort of flat pancake shapes.i think il try adifferent fish nexttime.he did eat another one today smothered in baked beans for flavour

if he can do dairy, a dab of creme fraiche or natural yoghurt helps them stick

if no dairy, you can try mixing some olive oil in (to make them a bit more sticky)
