Food ideas for the unfeedable?

My boys are having a super fussy phase at mo....DS1 won't eat anything except breakfast so hes not a prob fpor now as he wouldn't touch it anyway (he often goes thru what i call a sparrow phase ie picking and moaning)

DS2 however is a night mare to feed! He won;t eat Pasta or rice and at the moment won;t have potatoes, bread in any form (pitta, slices, barms), also won;t eat cheese or many veggies unless they are hidden in bolognaise (which ds1 won;t eat at mo), he doesn't eat crap although i have offered. He has no allergies and is also avoiding chicken unless its in pie. Theres probably loads i have missed off but at mo thats all i can think of.

So other than pie and gravy and cereal what on earth can i feed my boys??!!

DS1 is 3 and DS2 is 18 months

what about fruit?
crackers?
have you tried getting the 3 year old to make his own lunch/sandwiches?
carrot cake?
courgette cake?
soup?

MerlinsBeard · 27/10/2006 22:10

fruit is hit and miss and has to be bananas at mo

no crackers, cake is always good but will try making a carrot cake

not heard of courgette cake b4 and soup is a huge no!

courgette cake

cereal is not a bad start ...
how about cutting up slices of fruit and getting them to paint faces or patterns on them with those little tubes of coloured icing. we do banana crocodiles...
anyway DON'T WORRY it will pass

harpsichordcarrion · 27/10/2006 22:15

couscous?
noodles?
rice pudding or other milk puddings = carbs plus milk protein

MerlinsBeard · 27/10/2006 22:17

thanks for the recipe, will have a go at that, is it sweet or savoury? i can;'t tell! it looks like a funny mixture of things!

couscous in fact everything on that list is a NO think its the texture as its very like rice and pasta.

tbh i am not worrying lots (its happened b4) but am getting pissed off that things are being wasted

great idea with the fruit, i have some of those icing tube thingies so will do that 2mo

Thanks for all this HCC

ah well that's good, you need to stay chilled about it imo.
courgette cake is a bit like carrot cake.
if I were you I would probably abandon cooking meals for now if it is winding you all up and just produce a plate of things, some of which they will eat and some they probably won't.
and let them eat what they want from that.
picnics on the carpet?
tea with friends?
pudding in the bath??
will they drink fruit juice?
or milk/milk shakes?
my dd1 lived on air for a long time but managed to survive and now she is nearl three and a half she is starting to eat a wider range of stuff and more quantity too. it never really bothered me tbh and it certainly isn't worth everyone getting into a big stand off, esp with an 18 mo imo.
if you make the dinner table a battle ground, everyone loses their appetite..

MerlinsBeard · 27/10/2006 22:30

Thanks for that.

sometimes just needs someone else to say it to put it in perspective!

Tomorrow we will eat fruit with icing on in the bath and milkshakes with carrots in (or other yuck concoctions!)

they can be so frustrating can't they. Poor you. Eggy bread goes down well with my 16 month old... and I know it sounds pretentious but (bought) falaffel (M&S do a number of round balls of things as cnapes but they' freeze and help for can't be arsed days) and (again bought) fish cakes ... hot cross buns. Good luck.

moondog · 27/10/2006 22:45

Why are you pandering to them and wasting your precious time???
Cook what you,the boss decides is suitable and present it.
If thewy don't eat it-tough.

Haven't you better things to be doing with your time??

mamamaaargh · 28/10/2006 04:05

MOM - we often have courgette cake and love it - it's like carrot cake, I suppose. I use a different recipe but the cake is a bit green. That doesn't bother me but I know some people are rather put off by green cake! You can add some cocoa powder to the cake-mix to make it chocolate courgette cake. That makes the colour less of an issue and hides the veggies well! We had it for Ds's birthday and everyone said it was yummy (most didn't know what it was until after they'd eaten it).

Also, my ds is very picky but loves pesto. He'll eat it on bread, which he usually refuses, cheese and couscous. He used to like tortellini too, but as that's pasta your dc may not. HTH

FrannyandZooey · 28/10/2006 07:26

I agree with HC and the snack plate idea

Toddlers don't need to be sitting down at a table eating a proper meal IMO

Put a plate of stuff near where he is playing and let him help himself. Ignore whether he does or doesn't eat it - it's up to him what he chooses and when. Also if you have not slaved over a meal there is less likelihood you will be feeling stressed and resentful if it is not enjoyed.

Good choices for the snack plate are: grapes, satsuma segments, banana slices, apple slices, cheese cubes, hummus dip with little veggies like carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, or breadsticks, raisins or dried apricots, hard boiled eggs cut in slices

I would also go for healthy and filling cakes like malt loaf, wholemeal banana cake (search for recipe under my name), plus oatcakes etc.

Helping cook / prepare food is usually popular with all ages, if you can bear the mess

MerlinsBeard · 28/10/2006 20:10

thank you for all advice

Cratchitt, eggy bread is on the no list as is fish cakes and fish fingers infact anything that is remotly fish like

moonddog, i'm not pandering to them (did it come accross that i was?) they usually have we have so i am cooking anyway and do try the if you don't eat it tough approach but after a couple of weeks of eating like sparrows i am allowed to be concerned surely?

mamamaaargh ..cocoa powder in courgett cake? it sounds truely disgusting!! i haven't got any money to buy a single thing until wed ish but the ingredients for that will be on my list. sod the budget, they need to eat!

F&Z, i have found in teh past taht my 2 need that time where they sit down and have a proper meal but have relaxed it recently. Snack plates don't work, ds2 will eat from them but ds1 won't.

HCC, tried your fruoit with icing idea today, sat them in front of a video they like and they both enjoyed themselves but again ds1 didn't eat anything. Hes had half a slice of bread and 3 smilies today (asked for)

trying to keep calm keep relaxed, be not-give-a-fucky but its bloody hard!
