Hi everyone.

Right, I love my mum dearly but I was brought up on a diet mainly consiting of frozen convience food and a form of potatoes with every meal.

Now I am in my own home I tend to cook home made meals but theyre still very boring. Everything with some kind of potatoes, meat and veg in different styles. No sauces apart from gravy or cheese if doing pasta, absolutely nothing interesting ,I've never tried most of the stuff I see on here and its a hard habit to break.

Dp is very picky, onions, tomatoes and cream just top the huge list of food he doesn't like.

I dont like tomatoes, mushrooms or anything hot/spicy or fish, but I'm a bit more open to try something new. I dont want to be stuck with the same foods/meals over and over and I want my dd to have the varied diet I didn't.

So can anyone recommend food to try for a 'beginner'? I see things like chorizo and cous cous mentioned a lot on these boards but I have never dared to try them.

Thank you Smile

Given what you said you and DH enjoy eating, I'd also suggest you look up receipes for these:

Goulash (you can use beef or frankfurters depending on your budget)

Stew of pork, potatoes and apples (Polish I think)

Cottage / shepherds pie

We have used Hello Fresh a few times too and I liked that you could substitute meals with somewhat "safer" recipes if you didn't fancy one of the weekly options (I have been known to be quite fussy unfortunately!). Could you try something like this to build up some recipe ideas OP? Or even get some of the recipe cards that all the supermarkets tend to have and try a few that sound nice?

As a quick suggestion from a fussy eater - for last night's dinner OH and I had "tex mex chicken pittas with sweet potato wedges". Flattened and then coated chicken breasts with tex mex seasoning (this one is from Asda) and pan fried until slightly crispy. Sliced this and served inside a wholemeal pitta bread with homemade guacamole (mashed avocado, crushed garlic, lime juice, diced red onion and tomatoes) spread inside and sliced green peppers on top. Then just chopped a peeled sweet potato into wedges, dashed a little olive oil over with salt & pepper and roasted them for about 25 minutes. It's really easy, tasty and one of our faves!

Sorry just saw that your DP doesn't like tomatoes or onion! You could definitely leave these out of the guacamole though if otherwise he might enjoy that! Good luck with everything OP xxx

OP, do you mind me asking which fish you have tried and why you didn't like it? I only ask.as there are so many different types of fish and ways of cooking/preparing it that this might be another avenue to explore. Some fish is as alike as turkey mince is to fillet steak!

icedgem30 · 11/03/2015 06:43

I've tried cod, haddock, salmon and tuna. The smell at the fish counter makes me want to vomit so much I don't think I could ever bring myself to eat any others, though I do know this makes me picky and unreasonable I just cant bear it.

I do like tuna though, just has to be cold and out the tin (im weird).

So many good ideas appreciated everyone, I'll be going through this thread writing all the ideas down and trying about two a week. Starting with my chorizo omlette Grin

Uncooked fish dies have a fishy smell. Similar to lamb.

Does your family eat battered fish? Fish fingers, goujons or plain old fish and chips? Some supermarket does them from fresh fish and sell them in the fresh fish chiller. (I know waitrose does). it might not sound exotic, but it is adding fish to your diet. And you can expand to crab cakes etc (from the same chiller). If you want to, you can change the sauce you eat with them. I have bottle of peri peri Mayo which is lovely.

The BBC Good Food website is your friend.

Lots of options there to filter recipes so you can cook something quick, easy and for two people. Then, when you've bought a couple of different ingredients you can use the search box to find some other recipes to try.

All of the recipes are rated. So easy. My cooking has come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years and we are always eating something different.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 11/03/2015 07:57

Have you had tuna steak, rather than tinned OP? Its much meatier and less 'fishy' and divine raw but that might be a bit much for now

You could always try a nice prawn stir fry. Some egg noodles, broccoli, carrot etc and prawns?

Do you watch things like Saturday Kitchen? Could be a good source of inspiration as they're quite varied.

Don't know if anyone linked to this (saw a post by OP about lentils looking awful - I agree, but they do taste nice) - I cook this quite often withvery mild curry powder: chicken and lentil curry.

I zap the onions in the food processor - partly because I'm lazy and partly because I cannot be done with "Eeeek! What is this? Is it onions? I hate onions!" They eat it when they can't see it.

icedgem30 · 11/03/2015 10:35

Everyone else eats battered fish/fish fingers etc but I will have something else usually chicken.

I couldn't try crab. I'm up for trying new things but i have to draw the line at seafood. The thought of eating it makes my stomach churn and it's something I will never budge on, sorry!

Sometimes I think he is just picky for the sake of it. Made an oven type omelette with eggs milk bacon cheese sweetcorn. He loved it, ate it all and more. However he refuses to eat quiche and insists he doesn't like it, when its the same bluddy mixture on top of pastry, and he loves pastry! Arggggh.
