If you consider yourself a reasonably adventurous family what are you eating this week?

I'm a good cook and we eat quite well (ie healthily) but DH is very fussy and finding myself being quite boring with the cooking. DCS are very Young so thinks like lovely spicy stuff etc don't fly.

If you've got quite Young childten and aren't on a shepherda pie and tray bake rotation tell me what you're eating this week.

Not sure we're an adventurous family but we like to cook (and eat!). This week we are having:

Sea bass with fennel and tomato bake
Homemade pizza
Chicken stuffed with mozzarella and wrapped in Parma ham, gnocchi and veg
Butternut squash and chickpea curry with naan
Tortellini with homemade tomato and red pepper sauce
Sausages, mash and veg

We have 13 mo twins who pretty much eat what we eat (usually warmed up the next day as they eat earlier than us).

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 02/03/2015 16:29

As well as evening meal, I cook food for breakfasts and packed lunches, that can be reheated when needed.

Hare casserole
Sticky lamb ribs are marinating just now
Pork and chestnut meatloaf
Gluten free pizza with rice milk mozzarella, spicy salami, chicken, peppers, pineapple, spinach, red chillies, chilli oil, herbs and grated lemon
Pork and morcilla burgers
Buffalo burgers
Chicken livers with rocket salad
Brown crab meat with crisps
Pork loin roasted on top of a bed of rhubarb (leftovers will makes lunches, fried rice, paella)
Roast chicken (will be made into stir fries, paella, fried rice, packed lunches)
Chicken and pork paella
Lamb stew
Featherblade madras
Chicken soup with ginger
Chocolate chestnut mousse
Chestnut flour crepes
Going to try making a brazilian tapioca bread

Lots of food issues in this- no dairy, gluten, soy, mustard. Need to limit fodmaps, refined sugars, some spices, nuts and eggs as well. So have had to get adventurous to be able to provide balanced meals and a bit of variety at all, plus it means cooking meals for breakfasts lunches as it's difficult to get easy options for those meals, so just cook extra for leftovers or cook things like roast chicken or pork that can be used as a base of other quick things. Really difficult to vary carbs/vegetables much due to fodmaps/gluten issues, so try to use a lot of unusual meats so we don't eat chicken or pork and rice all the time.

MoustacheofRonSwanson · 02/03/2015 16:34

And I have some octopus that really needs using up so maybe pulpo ala gallega at some point too. And a rhubarb crumble made with coconut oil, gluten free flour and rice syrup. Plus maybe try making sushi off some kind at the weekend.

Thanks for all the great ideas. What do you guys do for breakfasts?

OP posts:
Tftpoo · 03/03/2015 07:51

We mix it up between porridge, eggy bread, scrambled egg, pancakes (banana, blueberry or whatever fruit we have), yoghurt and muesli, bagels/crumpets/muffins and good old Weetabix for breakfast. The boys love breakfast, it's often their biggest meal of the day, so I try to make an effort - at least whilst I'm not working anyway. It'll probably be back to cereal and toast when I'm back at work.

neversleepagain · 03/03/2015 08:16

Porridge with grated apple usually. Toast and fruit is a favourite. Scrambled eggs, eggy bread. Fruit bread toasted.

googietheegg · 03/03/2015 08:21

We don't eat red meat and are trying to go gluten free but I love to cook, so this week's menu is -

Paella
Beany chilli with lettuce wraps
Agedashi tofu
Jacket potatoes with roasted leeks
Carrot and coriander soup

MaCosta · 03/03/2015 08:24

Our breakfasts aren't particularly adventurous but I do make sure they're getting the best start I can give them each day.

Mondays are more exciting since I have sunday night to prepare so will often do something nice like cinnamon rolls and fruit or savoury breakfast muffins (with egg, sausage and bacon) - they did raise their eyebrows at "cakes with bacon in them!" the first time. Then we have beans on toast, cheese and ham toasties, omelettes, scrambled egg and beans on an english muffin, bacon sandwich treat on a Friday, always pancakes on a sunday. DS1 will always also have grapefruit and DS2 will always have a banana.

Then they have smoothie a vitamin tablet and a high does cod liver oil tablet too.

Pinterest is good for breakfast ideas.

Halogenaque · 03/03/2015 13:38

Lovely ideas. Need to get DH to stop being so fussy. Tofu a big enemy of his but I love it so going to force it soon!

Wow I am amazed at some of these dishes, especially the breakfast ones. I would have to get up at the crack of dawn to make these and then dd would prob turn her nose up anyway.

Our breakfasts are very very standard. DD has one of the following:

weetabix with warm milk and sprinkle of brown sugar
Readybrek with cinnamon and brown sugar
shreddies with milk and brown sugar (recurring theme Grin)
cocoa pops (which IS a bowl of brown sugar)

Dh and I have coffee, juice, rye crackers with butter and sliced banana. Sometimes porridge but I get sick of it really quickly. Last week I baked a very nice banana bread and we had that in the mornings. Sometimes toasted hot cross buns (bold!)

Dinners this week were:

Sun: we ate out, I had pan fried cod with buerre blanc, salad and potatoes
Mon: cottage pie with carrots
Tues: honey roast gammon, baked potato & spring greens
Wed: cajun chicken, mash, carrots and peas
Wed: chicken in a creamy tomato and basil sauce with pasta, garlic bread and salad
Thurs: I am away till Sun with work but dh and dd will have the chicken again
Fri: I hazard a guess at pizza since dh is cooking
Sat: no idea what they will have but dh is a competent cook so they will be fine

That was a particularly boring week but dd ate it all, and we were all v busy

Silverjohnleggedit · 04/03/2015 17:56

Breakfast - some of our favourites, often a weekend thing though.
Huevos Rancheros
Shakshuka
Baked eggs with chilli and yoghurt
Crepes
Kedgeree
Middle Eastern Vinegary scambled eggs
Poached eggs on muffins...actually eggs any way!
Waffles with fruit and maple syrup
Greek yoghurt with frozen berries, mixed seeds and maple syrup
Bacon sandwiches
Sardines on sourdough

Halogenaque · 04/03/2015 18:07

Anyone tried chia pudding? Been making that for the DC and has gone down ok.

Poppy1234 · 04/03/2015 21:07

I have a 4 year old and a 5 year old, we eat together and eat the same things. Our breakfasts are very basic and are either porridge with a variety of toppings (this morning we had stewed apple and date syrup) or greek yoghurt with fruit.

I love cooking but during the week I try to keep it meat free.

Dinners this week have been:
Sunday: Chicken baked over rice with cinnamon, roast cabbage
Monday: Pasta with broccoli pesto (leftovers are brilliant lunchbox fodder)
Tuesday: Mexican butternut squash soup with kidney beans and caramelised sweetcorn
Wednesday: Bulghar wheat pilaf with leek fritters (an Ottolenghi special)
Thursday: Roast vegetables topped with fried eggs, feta and dukkah (i'm big on toppings!)
Friday: French toast (Friday's are our lazy day, we go for a post school cake/hot chocolate so the kids aren't particularly hungry at tea time)
Saturday: We'll eat out.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/03/2015 12:49
