I am going to make a apple crumble for the first time and not sure how to do the topping, preferrably with things i already have in the cupboard, any help would be great, thanks.

rub butter into flour, add sugar (I like brown) some mixed spice and you're away]
You can add oats/weetbix etc as well.

lol at students making crumble, they must have moved on from pot noodles.

I use 3 handfuls of oats, 2 handfuls of flour, 1 handful of sugar (I prefer brown) and about 100g of butter (a large knob basically).

Mix dry ingredients together, melt butter and mix using finger so that it is held together in biggish crumbs.

Leftovers make a grat breakfast too

forgot to add spices. I normally add a teaspoon mixed spice/cinnamon/nutmeg.

Can add crushed walnuts to a crumble topping, esp good with apple crumble

lizandlulu · 25/10/2006 16:16

right, i know this sound really thick, but remember ive never done it before!! do i cook the apples first or do i just bung the topping on top of them and cook it

Do apples first - add a very small quantity of water and simmer until they fall, but don't add the sugar or any dried fruit until the end to avoid burning the pan.

I use 1 cup self raising flour, half a cup of soft brown sugar, half a cup of dessicated coconut, half tsp cinammon. Mix with 3oz melted butter and cook at 200/400 for 20 mins on top of stewed fruit.

Well done!

A bit late, but my quantities are

6oz flour
3oz butter
2-3oz sugar
1-2tsp spice
(RULE - always have half the amount of butter to flour and just under half for sugar)

It's always best to stew the fruit in a little water before putting in the oven for 30mins, 190deg. For a quick one do the topping in the magimix and use tinned fruit for the filling. Also can sub 2tbl sp flour for dessicated coconut.

Other lovely combinations are pear & apple, apple & blackberry, pear & peach (& cinnamon), apple & apricot, apple and tin of mixed berries.
