Frozen smoked salmon - quick (but urgent) question

Chimpola · 27/02/2015 15:44

I have taken some smoked salmon out of the freezer and have worked out that it's been there for 4 months, instead of the recommended 1 month. Can we eat it or do I need to think of a plan B?

Eat it

DownAtFraggleRock · 27/02/2015 15:45

I'd eat it in a heartbeat

Chimpola · 27/02/2015 15:46

Would you give it to (other people's) kids? Grin

Oh my god I never pay any attention to this! I think it might deteriorate in texture but don't think it has any health implications. Hope not anyway otherwise I would have to chuck out 75% of my freezer contents!

SoonToBeSix · 27/02/2015 15:47

Who says a month ? The packet if so ignore that. There should be a picture of a fish and a number on the inside of your freezer door go off that.

SoonToBeSix · 27/02/2015 15:48

Oh and yes I would eat it and I am paranoid about food poisoning.

Lemondrizzletwunt · 27/02/2015 15:48

EAT IT.

If you don't, I will.

Chimpola · 27/02/2015 15:49

That's helpful soon - the packet says 1 month, the freezer says 4-8, yaaay

As I understand it, they will never actually go off in the freezer however long they are in there, as in make you ill. The quality just deteriorates eg texture may not be perfect. But in my experience things have to be in for at least a year for that to be an issue.

DownAtFraggleRock · 27/02/2015 15:49

No, I wouldn't waste it on other people's kids Grin

Chimpola · 27/02/2015 15:52

Thanks all, dinner back on track!

I dont follow dates manufacturers pur that on to cover their backs legally so much food is,wasted in this manner. As long as it does not smell or taste funny on prep it shoukd be fine. I wouldnt bin it.

Same with non frozen products. I.e bread doesnt go off on the date but im.sure many ppl throw it out.

I dont want to thinm of all the, waste in supermarket bins its ridiculous.

Chimpola · 27/02/2015 15:54

I normally go by smell/look anya but as I'm feeding someone else's child I thought I'd better be extra careful!

Hate to be a party pooper but the reason smoked salmon shouldn't spend too long in a freezer is that is a cured product that contains a lot of salt. Same applies to bacon which, for a long time, used to say 'not suitable for home freezing'. The salt content means that it doesn't freeze as completely as other foods and can therefore deteriorate over a much shorter period of time.

So defrost and then assess. If it looks a poor colour, smells wrong or there's anything else you're not happy with, make a judgement

anya79 · 27/02/2015 16:39

If its for someone else and a child maybe dont use it to be extra safe.ive never frozen smoked salmon just the unsmoked sort
