To ask you what your dairy free store cupboard essentials are?

Dd2 is on a dairy free trial, I am struggling with what to feed her. Lunch used to be bits like cheese, crackers and grapes. What are your healthy store cupboard/fridge/freezer essentials to put together quick meals? So far I have baked beans, alpro soya yogurts, fruit pots, ham, fruit and not much else!

Hi folks,
as requested, we have moved this to Food/Recipes so it doesn't get overwhelmed with all the unreasonables...

TheDetective · 25/02/2015 20:54

Anti, The chilli pesto has cheese in. They do two dairy free ones from what I can see. :) gutted they have soya in though! I hope mine can have soya soon. I found soya is far harder to eliminate as it really is in everything! Dairy free is a doddle in comparison! Grin

Where can I buy the Books Books ice-cream please?

BouleSheet · 25/02/2015 21:03

FROZEN BANANAS has anyone mentioned these yet???
Whizz them with some cocoa powder and water (or almond/coconut milk) to make milkshake or ice cream. YUM!

Make your own Nakd bars (Think they're Lara bars in the states so google recipes but it's basically dates, almonds, cocoa powder)

Can't think of anything else at the moment as I'm obviously craving something sweet so only sweet things are coming to ind!

TheDetective - how about using a tomato paste made out of sun dried tomatoes `+ olive oil + some celery salt?

I have to say I don't have to worry about allergies but being able to flavour couscous made massive difference to how we eat in the evenings if I warm up cold couscous from the fridge I just add extra water to pesto and some tomato sauce went in today.

TheDetective · 25/02/2015 22:15

Thanks for the idea! That could work!

The OP was after dairy free ideas though Grin.

On the subject of couscous, mine loves the dried cous cous from Aldi, cheap as chips, I get the roast veg one and add chopped meats to it or anything really! It's my quickest tea for him!

Eggybread00 · 25/02/2015 22:43

Thedetective- the clinic says for CMP hard cheeses and butter are ok as the protein is broken down during the process. I'm just going by my friends daughter so may be waaaay off the mark :-)

SilverStars · 25/02/2015 22:56

Oatly milk and Oatly cream
pure sunflower spread
Tea cakes, crumpets ( just check are dairy free - I get mine from M&S as dc is dairy/egg free - they also do iced teacake I discovered!)
Hummous
Home made soup and mini pitta breads ( again I buy M&S - not sure of other shops)
Rice cakes - plain, fruit, marmite
Porridge oats
Stork block is dairy free - used to make pastry, bake with
Meat, veg, fruit - easy and likes lots of these foods
Home made pancakes with Oatly milk
Lots of bought biscuits I have discovered are dairy free - including Bourbon biscuits, pink wafer biscuits, party rings ( never looked until recently!!)

eggy no guarantees though , still causes problems here.

hwhite6 · 26/02/2015 08:22

detective not overly helpful to you, but our local newsagents gets supplied fresh bread rolls every morning by a local bakery, I asked on the off chance and they are just wheat flour, no dairy or soya!! So nice, I could eat all 6 before I get home!

Littleonesgettingbigger · 26/02/2015 10:16

TheDetective we shop at aldi so it would be amazing if you could tell me what you buy from there!!!

Rice Dream Vanilla Rice milk is nice. Good in pancakes, porridge etc. DH will drink it by the glass, I make chai or hot chocolate for me with it.
Coyo coconut yogurts are lovely but quite rich and pricey so are a treat thing.
Little John West flavoured tuna pots.
Sainsburys 50p precooked rice packets make it easy to rustle something up quickly, like the jasmine rice one best but they have lots of flavours.
I prebake potatoes and reheat them to order.

Littleonesgettingbigger · 26/02/2015 20:43

Thank you antimatter

We definitely can't tolerate any traces of dairy or soya here! That includes butter/hard cheese! Suppose there are different levels of intolerance. :)

Littleone while you are just DF it is relatively easy! I'll post my regular shopping list of things we have in for him. I'll put next to it DF and SF as relevant :)

Village plain bagels DF SF
Village bakery Crumpets DF SF
Village bakery potato cakes DF SF
Village bakery wholewheat medium loaf DF SF (not many breads are SF, this is, and it's 55p!!)
Cucina fresh panini rolls DF SF.

I know most breads are DF, so you definitely have more choice there. These are just the things I have in, most in the freezer so I can pop one out for lunch with various toppings and fillings!

Solesta sunflower spread (cheapest DF marge/butter alternative I've found at 69p!)

Everyday essential sausage rolls (DF SF)

Roast vegetable couscous DF SF (not checked other flavours)

Most of the deli meats are fine, just watch the roast chicken - these tend to have dairy in.

Frozen stuff, I keep in some of their frozen waffles and chips. I keep the steam fresh bags of veg for quick meal fixes, and frozen fish/chicken.

These are most of the staples I get.

Meal wise for lunches I do: Beans on toast, fruit to follow. Sandwiches with different veg/cucumber sticks, cherry toms etc chopped up (in fact, he gets these with most lunches, different things each day). Cous cous with some frozen chicken griddled up, maybe some frozen diced peppers too etc. Breadsticks with humus, deli meats and cucumber batons. Bagel with cream 'cheese' (Violife) wtih deli meats. Crumpets with whatever topping, marge and jam if its a treat lunch! Eggy bread (french toast to the posh) with cinnamon sprinkled in it (that's a favourite for him!). He also likes bacon, beans and toast with some grilled cherry tomatoes. Pasta - I don't tend to do for lunch, but sometimes I do - I have frozen pots of sauce, mix violife 'cheese' with it for extra flavour. Add chopped up smoked sausage (the Mattersons one is DF/SF) sometimes.

I don't worry about combinations of stuff too much. All lunches are quick here. He gets a carb base with protein, then veg/fruit/salad to go with it, whichever is most suitable!

Evening meals are either whatever I am having if suitable, or something hot, like mash, sausage, veg and gravy. Fish, chips and peas (he usually has the stuff that isn't battered). Spag bol. Chilli. Fajhitas.

Most things can be easily adapted to be honest. :)

Hope this helps you.

TheDetective · 26/02/2015 21:30

Oh, frozen waffles can be cooked in the toaster, sometimes I do these! Just put them straight in the toaster. I find they need 2-3 turns! Bag of steam fresh veg in the microwave, and some chopped cooked sausage, and its quick and easy lunches all around!

cdtaylornats · 26/02/2015 22:03

You could try the various meat and fish pastes on crackers or on melba toast. Shiphams or Princes spreads appear to be dairy free.

Littleonesgettingbigger · 27/02/2015 13:04

TheDetective thank you so so much that is amazing. We may have to go soya free as well so that is such a massive help as I was feeling overwhelmed at having to do that. I am excited about the bread, I thought if we went soya free I would have to pay £3 a loaf so that's such a great find! Flowers

TheDetective · 27/02/2015 15:10

I know, I do a little jump for joy every time I buy it!

I do still cry at £1.25 a litre of oat milk though!! He goes through 3L a week!

Swings and roundabouts hey?

I found SF much harder than DF. DF is a doddle in comparison, so fingers crossed for you that you won't need to.
