When & how to introduce drinking cups??

Hi there

I've been weaning my DD for the past few weeks and was wondering when and how should I introduce a 'sippy' cup (non-spill drinking cup). Also, what should I put in the cup? Her milk or water?

(she'll be 5 months old next week)

Most babies struggle with the sippy cups until later on as valve is pretty strong. Better to start with a free flowing one - like Tommee Tippee, Heinz basics or Avent with the valve removed which you can put in later for a non-spill. You could also try one on an angle (Doidy cup ? has been mentioned before on MN). It took both mine a while, and a spell of hot weather, to take any quantity from one so don't rely upon it for your dd's milk intake. Mine started on water in cups and had milk from Avent bottle with spouts.

Just to agree with Liz really. I've been giving DD water in a tommee tippee cup since we started weaning at 4 months. I let her get on with it herself, which is why we give her water - it doesn't get smelly! She's almost 6 mths now, and is currently sitting on the sofa with some rice cakes and a cup of water making an almighty mess - but having fun in the process
