Ladybird cake

I'm thinking of making a ladybird cake for DD's birthday in a couple of weeks and both the online tutorials I've seen require using a small, domed cake as the head section. I don't have anything I can use as a mini cake tin so was wondering if I could get away with maybe using something like a Belgian bun or a doughnut covered in black sugarpaste as the head. I'm not great with cake decorating, what do people think?

I think you could use a small mixing bowl if you have one made of something oven proof?
I did a ladybird once with an oval shaped tin and then smoothed the edges with a knife to make it rounded. I have a local shop that hires tins for a couple of quid, might be worth checking out?
