Whats the best tuna

carlyb · 21/04/2004 14:35

I have a 20 month old ds and want to try him on tinned tuna. I hate fish - so have no idea what is the best type - and at sainsburys I noticed there are loads of different ones.
Any ideas? thanks

I give my kids tuna in brine. I think the one in oil is too oily.

I would avoid those in brine as maybe too salty, so look for one in spring water or maybe vegetable oil (if you don't mind the calories for you or him). Buy just one small can, since you obviously don't expect to share and he may not like it (one of my toddlers loved it, one hated it).

definitely not in brine, or spring water, for under-1s, too salty. the ones in oil aren't too bad if you get steaks/chunks rather than flakes which appear to be swimming in the stuff.

There is no difference in the salt content of any of the tinned tunas if it is properly drained. The ones in oil are more palatable on their own than the other sorts. I like to add mayo, lemon juice, dill and black pepper to the ones in water or brine. Or they are nice added to a white or cheese sauce to have on pasta.

My two love tuna mixed in with pasta sauce either over pasta or in a jacket potatoe.

I like the one in olive oil best. Ds will sometimes eat it too, mashed with potato, butter, milk and peas or sweetcorn. Remember reading that toddlers (as well as pg or breastfeeding mums) shouldn't have it too often because of the mercury but can't remember what the guideline was. Once a week or something?

I'd go for the one in olive oil too, preferably nice fillets (spanish brands are the best, but more expensive). I like to add a little bit of good quality vinegar to it. Yum. Or in a pasta salad with fine green beans and tomatoes. Double yum.

Safeway (and others no doubt) sell one, I think its Albacore tuna? but its meant to be higher quality, dolphin safe, better brought up etc

I was going to ask about tuna too, being quite a newcomer to it!
I've noticed that they vary hugely in price. Is it worth paying more, is it better, tastier...?

Frenchgirl · 21/04/2004 20:56

yes posey, but not if you're only going to use mixed in a sauce
