Can anyone advise on vegetarian sweets?

Planning dd1's party. We've got two muslim guests, and two hindu guests, so rather than worry about who's eating what I want to do all vegetarian stuff. The buffet is easy enough, but wondered if anyone can recommend sweets that are veggie (and available) e in the supermarket?

Marks and Sparks do veggie Percy a Pigs if that helps? They're unusual in that most gummy sweets have gelatine in.

Hoppinggreen · 23/01/2015 10:31

Our Asda does non gelatine Haribo, look for one in an area with a large Asian population.

Anjelica27 · 23/01/2015 10:36

Jelly tots I think

Chocolateteacake · 23/01/2015 10:38

Yes to jelly tots. Veggie Percy pugs are eyewateringly sweet. Maybe m+s small bags of sweet popcorn and Jaffa cakes? Chocolate buttons are always popular.

Chillyegg · 23/01/2015 10:57

My local M&S have a variety of veggie sweets including wine gums! And aldi do some nice stuff... Also I'm sure a lot if Asian shops sell gelatine free haribo! Whare are you I could post you some?

DiddlyBiddly · 23/01/2015 11:00

You may want to double check, but pretty sure Skittles and Starbust are both veggie, possibly even vegan.

Pixa · 23/01/2015 11:01

Jelly Belly jelly beans are vegetarian friendly, as are some party rings too. Smile

Sizzlesthedog · 23/01/2015 11:04

Party rings are not veggie.

Tunocks tea cakes are veggie.

Sweets, fruit jellies supermarket own brand are veggie and skittles are veggie.

QoFE · 23/01/2015 11:07

Party rings went veggie recently :)

GertrudePerkins · 23/01/2015 11:26

this is great - thanks everyone. I will stock up with jelly tots, starburst and skittles, and have a rummage in M&S. i found all of the own brand stuff i saw in sainsbury's was either beef or pork gelatine.

Chillyegg thank you for your kind offer! I'm sure with all the advice on here I'll be able to track down a good selection. we're in an area with a big jewish population so kosher/pork-free sweets are easy to locate (if eye-wateringly expensive for the kosher ones) - I just need to make sure we're beef-free too.

Tesco sell jelly sweets in their Free From section - called Goody Good Stuff, or something similar.

Also Holland and Barrett.

Pixa · 23/01/2015 12:30

QoFE - it was a great day in our house when party rings went veggie! Grin

GrumbelinaPicklebottom · 23/01/2015 13:17

I don't think skittles are vegetarian - last time I looked they weren't (though admittedly it was probably a few years ago).

Lovehearts (is that what they're called? Those powdery fruity flavoured ones in a roll) are vegetarian.

Sizzlesthedog · 23/01/2015 14:13

Sainsburys own brand "fruit jellies" blue stripy packet are veggie. So are their strawberry laces.

GrumbelinaPicklebottom · 23/01/2015 16:30

Sorry - just to add, skittles may appear vegetarian as there are no obvious animal-derived ingredients. However, the colouring 120/E120 is cochineal (made from beetles). It's in m&ms too, sadly (so I stock up when I go back to Australia!).

GertrudePerkins · 23/01/2015 18:07

thanks all - I would have forgotten to look for cochineal

OP posts:
shmuf · 25/01/2015 17:07

All the Jewish sweets will be free from any animal gelatin (except sometimes fish..) and def no cochineal either

TickledOnion · 26/01/2015 20:35

Starburst are veggie.

HuevosRancheros · 26/01/2015 20:48

What was it in party rings that wasn't veggie? It wouldn't occur to me to look at biscuits, I would just assume they were veggie (veggie here, but not as strict at label checking as I used to be)

CultureSucksDownWords · 26/01/2015 20:52

Huevos, it'll probably be the red/pink colouring being cochineal.

Pixa · 26/01/2015 21:46

Yoghurts are the one thing that I can't get over. Mind you, after what happened on Sunday. I don't believe packaging anymore. Mentioned this on another post, but bought some cheese and onion pasty type things from a well known supermarket, bit into them and they had chicken in them. Livid. Waiting for a response from their complaints team...

Onykahonie · 27/01/2015 19:52

Party rings are now veggie, but that's a recent thing, so old packs might not be. Goody good stuff sweets are nice...and sometimes in Poundland. Supermarket strawberry/cola laces are normally safe, Sainsbury's fizzy fangs, some American hard gums, polos, some tic tacs, some Haribos - the weird ones, not the mainstream mix packs!

TiredButFine · 29/01/2015 19:13

Jammie dodgers are vegan!

walkardaniel · 31/01/2015 12:15

I think being vegetarian is good for our health and it seems like you are thinking on global way. I love to taste some sweet dishes every day and I can't miss a single day without sweet items but my last option for sweet is chocolate, I think you should try Mexican mushroom with Tequila.

redpriestandmozart · 31/01/2015 13:23

Oreo's and nobnobs. Loads of great info onn sweets, biscuits, snacks etc on The Vegan Womble website Smile
