Can anyone point me in the direction of a mackerel bolognaise recipe please? TIA!

That sounds vile

iwantgin · 15/01/2015 17:17

I make up a basic sauce of onion garlic and tomatoes then when close to serving add a can or two of mackerel. Usually the mackerel in tomato sauce. Chuck in some capers and prawns and serve.

It's nice.

ImperialBlether · 15/01/2015 17:28

All of the rest of it - onion, garlic, tomatoes, capers, prawns... these sound delicious. But mackerel? That would absolutely ruin the dish.

aquawater · 15/01/2015 17:32

Sounds a bit like Puttanesca which is a tomato sauce with tuna. Jamie Oliver has one in his 30min meals

Koalafications · 15/01/2015 17:33

Oh dear god, that sounds horrendous.

ImperialBlether · 15/01/2015 17:53

I've made Puttanesca and it had anchovies, not tuna. It's gorgeous.

Unidentifieditem · 15/01/2015 17:58

Hmm bit of an overpowering fish for a pasta dish but I'd look for a puttanesca (anchovies not tuna usually) and sub those with the mackerel. Well I wouldn't but you know what I mean ...

LizzieMint · 15/01/2015 18:00

My kids absolutely love pasta with a tin of mackerel or sardines stirred through. I use the fillets in tomato sauce and a squeeze of tomato purée.
Personally I think it looks awful (and stinks) but they all really love it so why not?!

Bunbaker · 15/01/2015 18:00

That sounds utterly revolting. Can't you make something else instead with mackerel and pasta?

ZingTheGreat · 15/01/2015 18:00

sounds horrid and I love mackerel

seaoflove · 15/01/2015 18:01

Mackerel bolognese sounds disgusting, but when you think of it as a fishy tomatoey pasta sauce (yep, like a puttanesca) it doesn't sound so bad. So don't call it a mackerel bolognese Grin

aquawater · 15/01/2015 18:04

The Jamie Oliver recipe has anchovies and tuna. It's a delicious recipe. I've made it many times. Perhaps not the exact puttanesca recipe but most of us are trying to feed our family not cook Michelin starred food!

Unidentifieditem · 15/01/2015 18:09

Aqua- I wasn't judging! I was brought up on pasta with a tuna/tomato sauce. I'm a bit partial to it!!

ImperialBlether · 15/01/2015 19:11

Hey, don't be like that, aqua! If you're following Jamie Oliver recipes for everyday meals, you're doing much better than most of us! I was just saying I'd never had it with tuna, not that it should be outlawed!

iwantgin · 15/01/2015 20:34

It's really tasty. Also quick and easy - and cheap.

If I just use the one can of mackerel it just enough for 4. It doesn't need to be too strongly fishy.

Take the word bolognaise out, as that makes it sound like it's full of beef too! ;)

grocklebox · 15/01/2015 20:35

its not a bolognese if its fishy!

Bonsoir · 15/01/2015 20:36

What?????!!!!!

ExitPursuedByABear · 15/01/2015 20:39

Why? Just why?

schmalex · 15/01/2015 20:41

Jeez! Seems IABU... Grin

Someone mentioned it on another thread about oily fish and I couldn't find a recipe.

I'll eat most things, I love mackerel and we have bolognaise at least once a a fortnight but mackerel bolognaise sounds absolutely disgusting.

Blurgh!

Bonsoir · 15/01/2015 20:44

Do you realise that Bologna is a landlocked inland town?

If you're after fishy pasta we have a nice recipe which involves whizzing onions in food processor so they are very fine. Soften in olive oil (I use the oil from the fish tin, if it's decent quality). REally let them soften nicely - ten mins or so, while cooking the pasta. Shortly before end stir in tin of tuna/mackerel/salmon/mixture. Also can add raisins and dash of red wine vinegar. Stir into pasta.
mmmm

schmalex · 15/01/2015 20:51

Yes, bonsoir, I was just referring to a recipe name on another thread.
