I would feed them to ds without a qualm, but with little friend coming .....

Thing is, I hadn't planned going shopping today (too much work and mumsnetting to do), and I've promised toad in the hole.

Anyone ?

I'd feed them to mine, but I wouldn't risk it with someone elses child, sorry. Think you need to go shopping

handlemecarefully · 17/10/2006 10:22

I personally wouldn't..(but would feed them to my kith and kin )

madmarchscare · 17/10/2006 10:23

go to the shops you lazy mare .

handlemecarefully · 17/10/2006 10:24

Doesn't your local shop have sausages (i.e one within 5 minutes drive). I live in the 'country' but I could buy sossies from the Petrol station which has a small grocery area which is 2 mins away, or the village shop which is a 5 minute drive...

BudaBeast · 17/10/2006 10:24

No - not worth it. You would never live it down.

themoon666 · 17/10/2006 10:26

Definitely not worth the risk... go shopping.

tubismybub · 17/10/2006 12:47

No definately not, but then i'll only eat chicken if it's two or three days BEFORE it's use by date. Have had food poisening from pork before so am generally a bit anal about food these days.

clumsymum · 17/10/2006 14:21

Right - been shopping so we're safe.

But tubismybub, 2 or three days BEFORE !!!

I really truly believe that use-by dates are purely guides, and the dates printed on food have a large margin for error, in case peoples fridges don't work properly, or they have a ride on a warm bus on the way home, and because the supermarkets profit from you throwing away good food to buy more. We FREQUENTLY finish things after use-by dates, and I'm always the one eating the yogurt found a week later in the back of the fridge, never had ill effects yet.

BTW the problems with pork and chicken are often to do with incorrect cooking, rather than keeping too long in the first place.

clumsymum, i know it's ridiculous I can't help it. I'm always sniffing everything in the fridge and even if chicken is well in date if it smells a little bit i won't use it. Just last week I threw away a pack of chicken breasts because there was a tear in the packaging and i didn't know if i'd done it or it had been done before i bought it. I think I may need help

tubismybub · 17/10/2006 15:55

By the way I actually agree with you about the large margin of error in sell by dates but also believe in that 5 people can all eat the same dodgy sausages and only one person might get sick from it and sod's law that person will be me!

Bozza · 17/10/2006 16:00

clumsymum I think I would have gone for it personally. I always come up as a bit slack on these threads though. I fed my 2yo a yoghurt which was BB 9/10 yesterday and nursery have not rung up yet.

clumsymum · 18/10/2006 13:14

After all that, the kids decided they'd rather have fish fingers for tea .....

So ds and I will have toad in the hole tonight, using up the old sausages, cos I'm putting the fresh ones in the freezer.
