January cookery bookclub: we're going veggie

glorious · 05/01/2015 10:35

Come and join the cookery bookclub! Each month we choose a couple of books/blogs/magazines and cook at least two new recipes of our choice from each.

This month we're reprising some favourites from last year with a veggie theme. The two books are Ottolenghi's Plenty and River Cottage Veg Every Day.

People will also be adding their own veggie favourites from other books and blogs.

Yes for delias winter from me- I'll give the shout out that it's on amazon market in good condition for 1p- £2.80 postage but still ShockGrin

I've also been obsessively buying looking into a modern way to eat- it's on amazon at £17 but eBay brand new for £13.99 ( which means I bought it and then justified buying the Delia as the two books have now cost me less than I would've paid for one)

Silverjohnleggedit · 20/01/2015 08:48

I just bought a copy of Made in India by Meera Sodha - it's such a lovely book has it been done yet?

Pantah630 · 20/01/2015 12:40

Another yes to Delia's Winter here, think I still have the video for this as well Grin

Not heard of Modern Way to Eat, off to google. silverjohn no we haven't done Made in India but we have done a few Indian cookery books, always go down well so I'm happy to do another. Though I really don't want to buy anymore yet this year. Are there any recipes online yet?

pregnantpause · 20/01/2015 12:44

There are lots of Made in India recipes online- the telthraph lists some, there's one on the niggela website and a made in India website - great nominations

Pantah630 · 20/01/2015 12:50

That's good, will go and have a look.

DS2 got Just Bento and The Scandinavian Cookbook by Trine Hahneman for Christmas, I'd like to nominate either, or, for future months too please.

pregnantpause · 20/01/2015 13:08

Ooh the author of made on India did a webchat on gransnet that makes a good read- on phone so can't link but look it up Smile

HuevosRancheros · 20/01/2015 13:20

Have just had the baked eggs - gorgeous :) As usual with an ottolenghi recipe, the flavours worked so well, really loved the sage. Very rich, and make sure you don't over salt it like I did - it's a pinch of salt here and another there......

Made In India sounds good, especially if recipes are online.... It's my birthday at the end of February, I can't start buying new books now, people always want ideas of what to get me!
Didn't someone get Prashad recently? I quite fancy that, especially as it's veggie... Maybe we could have a curry month? It's that kind of weather.....

I have the Just Bento book, she has loads of recipes on her sites if people don't want to get the book - Just Bento and Just Hungry. A bit of Japanese would be good!!

HuevosRancheros · 20/01/2015 13:33

Ooh, Prashad has a website too with quite a lot of recipes on it too :)

pregnantpause · 20/01/2015 15:21

Plenty mushrooms with melting tallegio for lunch today- they are lovely, though I'd go easy on the tarragon next time. Dh had the topping on toast as he doesn't like mushrooms - he described it as posh pizza on toast which I think is a fitting description.

TwoLittleTerrors · 20/01/2015 15:24

I have Prashad and have made quite a few things from there. They are all lovely. If you are veggie, then you should definitely get it. Along with a modern way to it. Grin pregnantpause I get my cookbooks in kindle/ibook format. They are a lot cheaper. A modern way to eat is £12 on amazon, but sometimes they can be as cheap as £2-3. I just got Persiana for £2.99 for example. A true bargain.

I have Delia's winter too and I can't remember when was the last time I cook from it. It's all quite involved isn't it?

A fan of just bento and just hungry here. And most of the recipes on just bento are very easy to do as they are for packing lunch boxes.

HuevosRancheros · 20/01/2015 17:09

Ah well, if you say I need Prashad, I'd better put it on my birthday list then, hadn't I? Grin

I bought Jerusalem on kindle, but couldn't get on with it, love flicking through cook books, so ended up buying the book too Blush

pregnantpause · 20/01/2015 17:18

as huevos birthday is in feb we could do Delia/ bento / modern way of eat in feb and an Indian theme in March with prashad and made in India?

couldhavebeenme · 20/01/2015 17:22

Just got made in India and love it already!

HuevosRancheros · 20/01/2015 19:21

Well that sounds perfect to me pregnant, if ok with everyone else? :)

Meant to say before, about the baked eggs - this is the first time I've cooked rocket before, and I was very impressed. Wilts down like spinach, but keeps that peppery flavour and doesn't have that odd soapy feeling on your teeth like spinach does. I wouldn't necessarily use it in a strong dish like a curry, as the flavour might get lost, but would definitely consider swapping it in some spinach recipes. Worked well with eggs :)

TwoLittleTerrors · 20/01/2015 19:56

I am new to the thread. Also my participation will be patchy as I have a 4mo. So I'm happy with whatever is chosen. I don't have made in India. But I noticed meera sodha has a blog and there are recipes on her site. I can barely make more than 1 or 2 new things so that is more than enough to go on with.

Silverjohnleggedit · 20/01/2015 20:18

Sounds like a good plan for Feb.

pregnantpause · 20/01/2015 20:22

We tried hfw leek and chestnut risotto this evening. I agree that the chestnuts really improved the taste and texture. Nice and easy midweek mealSmile

Pantah630 · 20/01/2015 21:30

Sounds good to me too, lots online for those that don't have the books, me included, though I may be tempted to buy if the recipes go well.

Huevos I did the same with Jerusalem, I've got other books on kindle if they're very cheap, including Plenty, but I much prefer flicking through a book.

Pregnant glad you liked it, I'd definitely make again. I was looking forward to taking the leftovers for work tomorrow, only to find DS2 has eaten them. Angry

pregnantpause · 21/01/2015 09:56

Oh pantah! How dare he- half the point of rissoto is leftovers! I'm making mozzarella stuffed arancini for lunch with whats left over- I've chopped the chestnuts smaller and mixed them into the rice. I'm looking forward itSmile

Dh is not a leek man so I made him hfw squash, mushroom and rocket salad yesterday evening. I tried some and it was very nice- love blue cheese and squash, and the balsamic vinegar with it is delicious- but the actual recipe contains lots of butter/ oil and cheese- not a healthy salad ( I scaled everything down to serve 1 and even then used less oil than suggested)

I've been meaning to make plenty stuffed onions all month so I might stretch myself and make them this evening for me and dh. It just seems such a faff to make- hope it's worth it.

HuevosRancheros · 21/01/2015 12:12

They are so worth it, pregnant :)

Make sure you immerse all of the onion in the cooking liquid so it all goes soft :)

toomuchapplepie · 21/01/2015 14:28

Twolittleterrors I have the dahl planned, I have no lentils in the house, every other imaginable ingredient, no lentils.

I might get that Made in India book, I fear I may have strayed in to enablers for cookbook addicts…

Roast Figs, Sugar Snow by Diana Henry has lots of lovely winter things, though at the indulgent, cheesy end of the spectrum :)

Silverjohnleggedit · 21/01/2015 16:02

Have now ordered a few Diana Henry books from the library - I need help!

OldBeanbagz · 21/01/2015 16:12

Another newbie to the thread, can i join you?

Added the Made in India book to my ever expanding cookbook collection late last year. So far i've made a couple of the samosa recipes and and also the chicken & fig curry. Yum!

glorious · 21/01/2015 17:29

Of course, please do join us that way we can pretend our cookbook collections are normal

We've made that risotto before and really enjoyed it in a simple way. Alsi reminds me we did the lemon and aubergine one from Plenty which I think divided opinions but I liked it.

Happy with all of those book suggestions.

We have roast figs sugar snow and do enjoy it, good suggestion if it's available in libraries etc.
