I put my 7 year old DD on a diet.

I was just reading the "overweight children" thread.

When my DD had a routine op, she wasn't supposed to run about or do any sports for 6 weeks. She got a bit plump so, without her realising, I changed the food she ate in subtle ways - low fat yogs instead of full fat, more fruit/less sweet stuff (although she didn't have THAT much to start with.

She's now a normal 7 year old girl - not a skinny (like DS!) but a 7 yo with a little tum. Just right

So there.

Not read the other thread, but cant see an issue with diets for kids as long as a big issue is'nt made out of it.

Thats what I thought. I did NOT mention anything to do with weight/food/diets to DD, just did it on the quiet

Sounds sensible then

Heavenis · 13/10/2006 14:04

I agree the more fuss you make the worse it is for the child.
I think you did it the right way MamaGhoul.

Good for you, the long and short of it is, you improved your dd health without her noticing..........well done

MamaGhoul · 13/10/2006 14:06

A pal didn't really approve. I couldn't understand why, but I think my pal's sisters both suffered from eating disorders which may explain.

I was going ot post for opinions but forgot (!) and that other thread reminded me

I don't think DD even realised her body had changed a bit, bless her

my ds has been seeing doctor bout weight problem, and he suggested that we made a diary of what he ate for 2 weeks writing with actual or approx calories, then cut down calorie intake by 20% we found changes very good, just meant we cut back but 250ish calories per day, and he lost 10 in a month!

donnie · 19/10/2006 11:46

sounds perfectly reasonable to me!

I actually work in eating disorders and I just think you obviously got it spot on - children don't know what they need to eat, parents should be in control of the food they eat and go for healthy variety. Quite a lot of people seem to develop eating disorders after being a bit overweight as kids and getting bullied.
