can I use self raising flour instead of plain?

have a recipe for muffins which needs plain flour with baking powder and bicarb of soda but I don't have enough plain flour - can I use SR or will something terrible happen? Are they very different?

I believe plain flour is quite important in muffins, but, if you don't have any, I'd use s/r without the baking powder and I'm sure it would turn out OK. I've probably done it myself in the past, but can't remember what happened!

I'd have thought you'd be fine.

I've done the opposite and used plain flour plus baking powder for SR. I would imagine you should cut down the baking powder but maybe not omit it completely. I think I'd omit the bicarb and use 1 tsp of baking powder.

What's the worst that can happen? The muffins rise too much and are light and fluffy!

Just checked muffin book, ok to use sr flour, but
best to use plain. It also says if you do use sr flour not to leave the bicarb out it does not say why. Saying all that i think you should be fine.

right then, I have no excuse for tomorrow I sneaked off for coffee with a friend instead of being a domestic goddess this afternoon but will enlist dd to help me make incredibly light and fluffy muffins tomorrow afternoon like a supermother...thank you everyone!
