About the increase in threads about what people feed their kids and how it somehow makes you a bad person if your kids eat x,y,z. I love to cook, I rarely give my kids 'pre-prepared' food and I like to think my kids have a reasonably healthy diet with a good blance of meat, fruit, fish and veg, BUT I fail to see why it is the end of the world if your/my kids go to another friend's house for dinner and eat stuff you/we would not feed at home. The obvious exception is allergies but if something is fried when at home it would be grilled, or if something has more sugar or an additional e number to those we would choose to do at home, is it really so totally awful?

Personally, I am just glad that my kids have nice friends, that they are invited out, that they feel happy inviting kids back here, that they are generally happy, sociable and just, well, ordinary balanced kids.

Awaits backlash

I also agree 100% with you oxo, I do try to give my dcs the healthiest options but there are sometimes they do get 'treat' foods, all about balance

emkana · 11/10/2006 21:16

As I believe it was my thread that has set you off I would just like to point out that I am totally middle-of-the-road an "a bit won't hurt" kind of person - I even give my children cheese strings, I'll have you know -
BUT I was just surprised that no veg or fruit whatsoever was offered at this meal my dd went to, that's all. It just wouldn't cross my mind to prepare a meal without any fruit or veg, if having cheese on toast I would possibly cut up an apple or something.
And isn't this what MN is for, to express your surprise/disgust/outrage/wonder/smugness?

i agree
my kid has angel delight at childminders.
i can live with this (just...)

handlemecarefully · 11/10/2006 21:49

Oh goodness I'm with Emkana. My children eat 'sin' food too, but a meal just isn't complete without some proffered fruit and vegetables. Whether the little buggers choose to eat it or not is neither here nor there

Agree Oxo. Some of the food threads have seen people really getting on their high horse - accusing people who feed their kids chicken nuggets of child abuse, FGS!

I think food has become the latest stick people can use to beat others with. 'I am morally superior to you because I cook everything from scratch'. Fine, feed your own kids whatever you like, but properly qualified dietitians agree it is all about BALANCE. The odd fruit shoot never killed anyone.

FrannyandZooey · 12/10/2006 08:32

I haven't seen anyone getting criticised for what they feed their children, or any suggestion that you are a bad or inferior parent if you feed your child certain things. I have however seen plenty of threads which discuss certain foods being more or less healthy than others. I don't see any reason why we can't discuss food being healthy or unhealthy. If you feel confident about your food choices I don't see wy this would bother you, and if you do feel less than happy with your diet, perhaps these threads could help?

SherlockLGJ · 12/10/2006 08:38

I was on the same thread, and Fruit Shoots set my child mad.

I tell people they set him mad, I then expect him not to be given one.In the same way,if he had a nut allergy or a wheat allergy I would expect that to be respected.

I fail to see the problem TBH.

FrannyandZooey · 12/10/2006 08:41

Oh, was it that thread?

We thought it was a strange meal to have been served? Well, it was. I don't think it was a particularly dreadful meal - but it was a bit odd.

FreakyFloss · 12/10/2006 08:44

DS is existing on a not brilliant diet atm - as dp is cooking and his skills are lacking &/or he has been on a 10hr shift beforehand. Not going to feel guilty about it as not a lot i can do for another week or so.

joelallie · 12/10/2006 12:22

"how many mnetters will be doing this while having a glass of wine or a ciggy?????? know what i mean ? "

Eh? You mean it's not good for you! . But the kids love it! You should see their little faces when I crack open the chardonnay..... And my 3 yr olds just mastered using a cigarette lighter. So proud ...

nikkie · 12/10/2006 19:18

Think this is the first thread I've seen where everyone agrees!

WideWebWitch · 12/10/2006 19:24

Well, I don't think the odd packet of crisps or bar of chocolate is the end of the world but I do think it's ok to discuss nutrition and food here. And I do think it's important, what we feed our children. This is the first generation of children expected to die before their parents, I think that tells us something about the average chid's diet. Which is, if stats are to be believed, shite.

lulumama · 12/10/2006 19:26

ROFL! @Joelallie!!

and nikkie - yes, 100% harmony over here!!
