.. DH likes meat for his meals ... some cuts of meat are just cheaper than others and go further

I do an Irish Stew with Neck of Lamb, potatoes, carrots, onion, stock seasoning .. slow cook on the hob for 2 - 3 hours

Chicken casserole with drumsticks and thighs .. add any veg and stock, mixed herbs and in the oven for an hour

Stewing Beef casserole .. with onion, carrot, chickpeas, stock, tomatoes .. 2 - 3hours in the oven

Sausage casserole .. tomatoes, beans, carrots, onion .. 1 hour in oven

so over to you .. extend my repertoire .. cheaper cuts of meat please

do you do any mince based stuff?

iota · 09/10/2006 14:54

e.g. chilli , meatballs, spag bol

Gobbledispook · 09/10/2006 14:54

Chicken casserole - chicken pieces, big chunks of carrot, onion (I'm afraid I use a packet for this one - any other suggestions welcome!)

Spaghetti bolognese or another one with mince which is mince, bacon, carrot, onion, celery all fried up together. Add 2 tins tomatoes and glug of red wine - loads of herbs and seasoning. Mix with penne pasta. One layer in baking dish, layer of grated cheddar, second layer of pasta/meat combo, top with parmesan. Bake 20 mins. Top meal.

Sausage casserole (again, sorry, i use a packet!)

Yikes, just repeated your list! More suggestions please! Especially for casseroles without using packet mixes.

meatloaf, shepherds pie

Jaffacake1 · 09/10/2006 14:57

I buy that cheaper chicken that is already sliced up quite small...£2.98 for quite a lot and do a stir fry. Nothing else I do is that cheap...we are steak lovers here...

TwigTwoolett · 09/10/2006 14:57

ahh yes mince .. yes do chilli con carne (a lot .. its DS fave) .. and make beefburgers / meatballs / spag bol

don't do shep pie that often .. too much work in it

like the pasta - mince dish .. will try that

curry - whatever meat you like simmered for a couple of hours in a casserole dish in teh oven

nailpolish · 09/10/2006 14:58

sausage casserole

grill sausages to crisp up the outsides - 'brown' them

chuck in a saucepan with 2 tins of mixed beans and 2 tins of chopped tomatoes

spoon of tom puree and about 200 ml of beef gravy (ie bisto) and a teaspoon of cornflour

simmer til it thickens (assuming you grilled the sausages til they were cooked through)

hey presto

we usually have with rice

tasty filling cheap and easy to make

iota · 09/10/2006 14:58

lasagne - which to my mind is spag bol with more work

TwigTwoolett · 09/10/2006 14:58

GDG stop using a packet for your sausage casserole .. just brown sausages, fry onions and carrot .. shove in casserole with tin tomatoes, tin heinz baked beans, tbsp mixed herbs and bake .. its yum .. no mix needed (Dinner Lady recipe)

oooh, twig - am gonna try that on Saturday night!

Will come back to you with the verdict!

Blu · 10/10/2006 22:06

Spicy marinated pork ribs
A spicy green lentil thing with either chicken or spicy 'worst' type sausage inn, add dash of creme fraice at the end (green or puy lentils, v finely chopped carrot, onion maybe celery softened, stock, maybe a few slilvers of smoke bacon...add small chinks of chicken or wirst, even frankfurter)
Lamb shoulder
Lamb shanks. V slow stewed with veg, leftover red wine and some beans such as cannelini added later is filling - one shank does dp and I unless we are feeling v greedy.
Pork stir fry - pork steaks / chops can be v cheap - even outdoor reared (which I buy)

Blu · 10/10/2006 22:07

Oh yes, what are those slightly scraggy looking pork chops with darker meat? rib chops? More tasty - and cheaper, than ordinary chops.

Bozza · 10/10/2006 22:23

DH doesn't eat lamb (fussy that he is). But I do the following:

Stew and dumplings - brown stewing steak with chopped onion. Then add flour to coat meat. Then add carrots, potatoes, swede, turnip, parsnip, celery, leeks and stock, oh and herbs and worcester sauce and leave in slow cooker for a few hours, then add mushrooms, make dumplings with veg suet and add to pan.

Meat and potato pie. Brown stewing steak and cook with onions and mushrooms and worcester sauce and stock in slow cooker for a few hours. Chop potatoes and boil for about 15 mins. Make shortcrust pastry and combine into a pie. It is a family favourite.

For my sausage casserole I use kidney beans and lots of root veg (see stew list above - I do like my veg) as well as the tin of tomatoes.

I make a dish which is basically spag bol but with bacon instead of mince.

Obviously do spag bol, chilli and shepherd's pie.

Sausage and mash, toad in the hole.

Delia's chicken thighs in bbq sauce, which she suggests is served with rice.

Jambalaya for which I use leftover chicken (from joint) and chopped up sausages

Turkey meatloaf - uses turkey mince which is dead cheap. My DH who is also a bit of meat man despite my wanglings really likes this.

Turkey steaks fried with honey, paprika and orange juice added, which I serve with mashed butter beans and either salad and veg.

Stiglet · 11/10/2006 12:24

Jerk chicken / tandoori chicken with legs

Goulash with pork fillet

Steak and ale, beef stew,

Dublin Coddle (bacon & sausages)

Mince - spag bol, tacos, homemade burgers, homemade kebab with pitta

Pork chops with onions, sage & thyme, pork in cider

lucy5 · 11/10/2006 12:26

I did beef mince stew and maash last night.

DarkAlleyBongo · 11/10/2006 12:28

what's in minced beef stew lucy? was going to do a shep pie but it's getting boring already

frogs · 11/10/2006 12:30

Bacon and lentil stew/soup popular here.

spots · 11/10/2006 12:30

Moussaka. Basic tomato/minced beef or lamb sauce w. red peppers; layer with slices of grilled aubergine and cooked potato; top with mixture of yoghurt and egg, sprinkle with glots of grated cheese. Eating leftover veggie version as I type!

lucy5 · 11/10/2006 12:33

I fry onion, garlic and mince, then add chopped carrots, add made up gravy, parsley chopped potatoes [swede or whatever} peas, more gravy granules, oxo cubes, marmite and let it bubble gently. I also add suet dumplings. just bung in what you have got reALLY. You might need extra water too.

DarkAlleyBongo · 11/10/2006 12:42

thanks love. i shall do that instead !
