Do people still use pie plates?

I'm trying to find a flatish metal plate for pies. My DM used to use them but has got rid Shock
The only thing I can find so far is too deep - I remember the plates being only about 2cm at most.
Anyone?

Yes, I do. But they are hand me downs. I've never bought one.

I'd suggest trying an old fashioned hardware shop/ironmongers or somewhere like Lakeland.

VerucaInTheNutRoom · 20/11/2014 09:25

I have one if those blue and white enamel pie plates, it's very shallow. I got it at a local hardware store but I think you can get similar at Lakeland or Amazon.

Catsmamma · 20/11/2014 09:26

probably you'll find enamel pie plates in a Hardware store...if you have one

otherwise pyrex plates can be good if you frequent charity shops.

VerucaInTheNutRoom · 20/11/2014 09:26

Also, I don't like this modern trend of a pie being some shit thrown in a dish with a bit of pastry chucked on top. A proper pie should have a pastry base too.

Camping section at Poundland! Enamel plates that are perfect for pies.

Mintyy · 20/11/2014 09:27

Same as Veruca (nice name Hmm) - I have a white enamel plate with a blue rim, bought in my local Aladdin's Cave type shop. I use it to make apple pie and the like.

BL00CowWonders · 20/11/2014 09:28

Thanks.
I don't really want glass or china - fear of sogginess.
But hardware store is a really good idea. I'm beginning to wonder if a camping shop might also be somewhere to look.

I've seen the blue and white enamel one in Wilko but have also seen them in hardware stores, Yorkshire Trading.

My pie plate is just about knackered after 20 years of use; I've not seen one to match it. It has holes in the bottom to allow steam to evaporate so no soggy bottoms

cowbiscuits74 · 21/11/2014 15:49

yes and I agree pies should have a pasty base as well as a top.

I have a tin one and a glass one

camping shops a good idea or try the Falcon range, very retro

I just got myself a lovely gray enamel falcon mug which I found in Fortnums of all places

ouryve · 21/11/2014 15:51

I've got some of the metal ones from Lakeland.

I used to use a pyrex plate because the shape was perfect, but it's long gone, now.

BL00CowWonders · 21/11/2014 17:30

I'm making a pumpkin pie so def no top layer. Might have to use a flan ring if I can't get to an outdoorsy shop

Catsmamma · 21/11/2014 17:32

pyrex is great for pies...well for short crust!

I have some deeper enamel pie dishes...M&S did fancy puddings in them ages ago, they are great for all sorts

and surely pumpkin pie has a bottom and no top? :o

BL00CowWonders · 21/11/2014 17:35

Isn't that what I said? Def no top layer of pastry

OP posts:
Catsmamma · 21/11/2014 17:56

oh lol...i was completely at a loss there as to how you were making a pumpkin pie with only a top (and therefore no bottom!)

I was dashing in and out making 3 dozen mince pies so apols, for my speed reading and posting!

ProfYaffle · 21/11/2014 18:00

Oh, nostalgia! The tap tapping of a butter knife on an enamel plate as the excess pastry is trimmed off - I'm right back in my Nan's kitchen in 1979 Smile

alemci · 21/11/2014 18:05

i have a Tala one from Lakeland - great product.

ProfYaffle · 21/11/2014 18:05

This is the kind I remember.

BoreOfWhabylon · 21/11/2014 18:07

Lakeland has them

It's such an evocative sound - 100% agree with ProfY.
Only matched by the sound of my mum's wedding ring on the wooden rolling pin Smile
