Do you all make birthday cakes or are you a shop bought hussy like myself?

I did once and it looked like someone had sat on it.

Feel the need to make one for dd1.

But she wants a fairy/princess/ballerina/pink one and it would be v easy to toddle into m&s and buy one.

what about this OO?

TwigTwoolett · 05/10/2006 13:56

pudding bowl with a barbie doll in the top

QueenEvil · 05/10/2006 13:57

Hussy.

Easiest option imo.

oliveoil · 05/10/2006 13:57

how do you bake it in a bloody bowl though?

OP posts:
MamaGhoul · 05/10/2006 13:59

Just pour the cake mix in the "bloody" bowl

(something tells me you feel bullied into making htis cake!!)

oliveoil · 05/10/2006 14:00

lol, I am! But I appreciate the advice.

This bloody bowl though, will it not smash in the oven, do I have to purchase a bowl especially?

Do you have pyrex? That should be fine in the oven

TwigTwoolett · 05/10/2006 14:01
oliveoil · 05/10/2006 14:03

I will ask dh if our bowls are pyrex, he cooks .

God I am useless.

I can feel a Lakeland spree coming on to kit out my baking cupboard, springy muffin tins, vanilla extract (or is it essence?) etc

I buy biscuits too .

tragic

oliveoil · 05/10/2006 14:06

it is tragic

as whenever I do make them they don't last five mins as they are far superior to shop bought

Yeah yeah OO. We believe you, 1000s wouldn't...

Queenmummy · 05/10/2006 14:07

Bake it yourself!!!! Doesn't matter if it doesn't LOOK perfect - it will taste so much better than shop rubbish. Just add lashings of pink icing and you could sit a barbie or similar on the top of it. A few sprinkles/dolly mixtures around the edge and your DD will be in heaven

TwigTwoolett · 05/10/2006 14:08

I am loving that this thread came up on the first day I've baked in months .. and I baked with DD too .... smug-a-

oliveoil · 05/10/2006 14:11

pi$$ orrf

my oatmeal and raisin cookies taste divine, but I put too much mixture on my round tray and I now have one 12" cookie!

and I'm NOT sharing

BettyBatShapedSpaghetti · 05/10/2006 14:13

OO -just bake your own cake and cover it with roll out icing (it comes in all sorts of colours incl. pink!). Gives a lovely smooth, professional finish.

Use other colours to make flowers, butterflies (or buy those delicate butterflies on wires) and make a fairy/princess (sculpt out of the roll out icing) or buy a small ornamental one to pop on the top.

Honestly, if I can do it, anyone can

oliveoil · 05/10/2006 14:16

MamaG - I did that with my cookies once. Annabel strictly instructed several trays, but I only had one and thought ahhhh well, how far can they spread?

over the tray and into the oven is where.

Olive - pink buttercream is made like this:

Cream together a couple of ounces of butter with some icing sugar. Add a few drops pink colouring. Add some more icing sugar and some hot water (bit by bit, alternating between icing and water) until you have the consistency and amount you require. Spread on cake. If you go a bit mad and make too much, it freezes well - so you can whip it out for your DD to ice fairy cakes with you on some future occasion

Bozza · 05/10/2006 14:19

I buy them for DS and make them for DD. DS thinks he is missing out if he doesn't get one from Asda. DD doesn't know any better. When she was 2 I made her a butterfly cake.

Pink icing is made by making white icing and adding red food colouring. Or you could use butter icing and add red food colouring - sometimes it is easier to work with.

DastardlyDevilishDior · 05/10/2006 14:19

MmaG - pmsl @ 12" cookie! Heaven. I seem to be stalking you around MN today!

hunkermunster · 05/10/2006 14:19

DH makes cakes in this house. I don't like cake much - if he wants it, he bakes it

sugarfree · 05/10/2006 14:19

In our house on your actual birthday you get to choose what's for dinner and what homemade cake you want. Then they get a shop bought cake for their party.(This works because of the age gap,so only one child in a year is into having a party.)

MamaGhoul · 05/10/2006 14:19

I did notice that dior
