Quick ideas for sandwich teas please, no faffy nonsense

dd seems to be prefering a finger food tea lately, has had a few strops when she gets tired at night and it is easier to put things in front of her and leave her to it. So, I have got in the usual fish fingers (how nice are they?), nuggets etc but want to know ideas for sandwiches APART FROM CHEESE!!!!! What about those Shipham spread things I remember from childhood, are they full of cr*p or ok? Sliced ham/turkey are they ok or in the bad mother camp?

She has a good breakfast and homemade lunch so I am not tooooo fussy as I know she already had decent food in her but I want something quick and easy and can't think of any fillings.

Thanking you in advance oh wise ones.

xxxx

oliveoil - my dd has been doing the same thing for the last month or so. Even at breakfast time. Finger foods are brill but when I want to get something else into her (weetabix, readybrek, etc.) I distract her with something she can feed herself with (toast, brocolli) or let her hold the spoon, as I guide it.

Not what you were asking, but hth!!

ps love all the finger food ideas. Will definitely use some of them.
Thomcat - I made the apple and chicken balls (Annabel Karmel?) a few years ago - delicious - but ds wouldn't eat them, so I just had to force myself to demolish them! Now you've reminded me I will try out on dd.

are you Bond's missus with a name like that?

Thomcat - do you mean the annabel karmal chicken things? dd looked at me like I had offered her a turd when I proffered these recently, has eaten them before though.

Errr, yes I think they are actually Annabelle Karmel's, sorry, oh well. How about little homemade meatballs then?

Thomcat · 14/04/2004 12:34

Fishcakes!!

oliveoil · 14/04/2004 12:35

Are they easy peasy to make? If they are AK I may have them in the book, find her recipes a bit fussy sometimes though.

They are in AK's but just get some mince and do what you want with it, fry them off and freeze, then defrost and heat up in oven.

Fishcakes, again, easy peasy but if not you can buy nice ones in Tesco's, or wherever.

Also waitrose - do mini cod & s.corn fish cakes and little mini cheesy burgers, all good finger food.

I decided we were "only" having sandwiches FROM NOW ON IN THIS HOUSE for dinner. They were even more trouble to make than my usual stuff! And DD1 said what's for dinner after eating hers. Yesterday very stressed (see sticky fingers post) and found leftover pasta with store bought cheese sauce and chicken bits in fridge, both kids were in heaven helping themselves from the tupperware banged down on the table after turfing out the neighbors kids, and it saved my life. Just make extra, and don't reheat the whole portion if it's got a shop bought cook-chill element, it will keep a couple of days; microwave it if they don;t want it cold.

Veal liverwurst (well he is half-german), pineapple frischkäse - you know like philadelphia cheese, but I use a different brand that isn't as tacky. Vegemite! - marmite for you guys I guess. Plus chunks of banana and apple. What about Avocado? - I haven't tried it yet but I might.

I made these Muffins out of my Annabel Karmel cook book that have crushed pineapple, sultanas and carrots in them and he likes those and you only have to bake on batch and they last a week - he likes them for breakfast or as a snack or as part of his teatime buffet.

magnum · 14/04/2004 12:55

How olds your dd? I was going to ask for ideas for finger food as my dd is prefering to eat that way. she's 10 mths. Are all these suggestions ok for her as I'm getting really stuck for ideas.

Thomcat · 14/04/2004 13:12

Just rang my mum to see how the little munchkin is and she has said "Ba bye" to everything she has been offered to eat ALL day! SO pleased I soent an hour slavcing to provide her with nice fresh finger food!!!!!

oliveoil · 14/04/2004 13:52

It is so hard not to get annoyed isn't it? My little one loves cheese but yesterday let out a howl of displeasure at the sight of it for tea!

Magnum, I think the only thing you need to be careful about for under ones is salt - so not ham or sausages for now, and Marmite is also very high in salt. But you can make things like fish fingers, fishcakes, nuggets etc without added salt, and of course fruit/veges/toast/bread/rice cakes etc is fine.

AK says not to feed children sausages or ham! Something I have ignored....

hoxtonchick · 14/04/2004 21:16

I made the AK chicken & apple balls for ds & his friend tonight, inspired by this thraed. The little * refused to eat them, so I'm going to freeze them & perserve. They tasted ok to me...

Thomcat · 15/04/2004 09:45

That's one thing about making the food yourself I suppose, if they refuse to eat it (even though they loved it last time!) then at least you can eat it and actually enjoy it! Those chicken & apple balls are really nice!

I made Lottie loads of little orange muffins and sneaked in a load of linseed (very effective in clearing you out!). Funnily enough she took one bite and that was it, 12 fresh homebaked muffins going spare, but packed with linseed. Still her dad didn't need to know that did he!!!

PopeyesPiece · 15/04/2004 10:06

We had to go to B&Q last night (oh the thrill) so dd stayed at my MIL for her tea and guess what? Little angel for her, got back and she said 'oh, she is such a good eater, no problem at all' grrrrrrrrrrrrr

bundle · 15/04/2004 10:07

hoxtonchick, I've had exactly the same experience with the chicken balls..me & dh ate them instead
how are you btw?

Blu · 15/04/2004 10:08

For finger food we do:
Avocado sandwiches.
Sardine sandwiches (I buy the 'skinless/bonless' tins from Sainsbury's)
breadsticks and hummous.
organic sausages
organic swedish meatballs (Tesco)
Felafel (ditto)
Asparagus spears
baby sweetcorn (fresh or frozen)
Oven chips

bunny2 · 16/04/2004 08:29

Spanish omelette? Saute onion/diced veg. Add a few whisked up eggs and some cooked diced potatoes, cook in the pan till it is set. I usually finish mine off under the grill as it is thick and the top doesnt cook from underneath. This keeps well in the fridge.

hummus is lovely mixed with grated carrot and sultanas or raisins. it ekes out a small tub for lots of people (or i sometimes get the teeny tubs in M&S) and is nicer than hummus alone imho on a sandwich. some great ideas here, must bookmark...

colditz · 26/10/2006 23:14

eggy bread!!!

Bread dipped in egg and fried in olive oil, slice into little bits.
