Alternatives to rice

Does anyone have good alternatives to rice that work with curries, chilli etc? Sometimes I use couscous as it's much quicker, but keen to hear of any other ideas... Thanks in advance!

Quinoa?

ChazzerChaser · 02/11/2014 21:31

Bulgar wheat, quinoa. I stick to rice myself though

bulgur wheat

Bulgur wheat.

I find I'm using it more than rice now.

orzo is nice in soupy casseroley things...basically rice shaped pasta.

realy good for slow cooker stuff where it hasn't thickened as much as you expected, or you put too much stock in, just hurl in a pack and it soaks up all the stock and flavour

I often just do bread with a curry. I sometimes make my own puris, or just use pre-made naans, or toasted pitta breads.

Yorkshire puddings also go quite well with most curries (like spongy crispy naans). I have never attempted proper dhosas, but thin crispy pancakes aren't a million miles off...

and chilli I often just stick in a baked potato

Pearl barley works nicely, but takes a lot longer to cook.

I have some buckwheat waiting to be used in something, but haven't tried it yet.

Chilli with jacket spud, potato wedges, sweet potato wedges, flatbreads, pittas, cornbread?

Curry with naan, chapatti, sag aloo or similar potato based side.

If you want something more ricey, then quinoa, bulgar, buckwheat, pearl barley are all possibilities.
