what for the love of god is kale??

expatinscotland · 03/10/2006 16:24

How about frying it all up, w/onion, then adding tinned tomatoes and grated parm cheese on top?

expatinscotland · 03/10/2006 16:24

Kale is DEVINE!

We've got green and purple.

Oooooo, yummy.

liath · 03/10/2006 16:25

I'd probably sweat down the kale with butter and garlic and serve it on the side like spinach.

CarolinaMoon · 03/10/2006 16:26

if I had some kale, I would fry some chopped up bacon, then chuck the kale in the frying pan and put the lid on so the kale can steam through, then throw in some toasted pine nuts.

you could add some cooked pasta to that, but personally I wouldn't.

you could fry the garlic with the bacon, or not bother.

TooTickyTheAppleMuncher · 03/10/2006 16:27

Okay, expat will do - but extract ds1's portion before the toms go in...and it's dairy-free parmesan here....
Should I pre-steam the kale?

Keep 'em coming - let's make kale cool!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 03/10/2006 16:30

I didn't pre-steam it, Ticky.

I did blitz it down in the food processor, though.

Then I did a medley of veg in olive oil - added the kale last, however, b/c it cooks down WAY faster than carrot, onion, etc.

Toss w/olive oil is another option.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 03/10/2006 16:30

Oh god is it riverford kalefest time again?

hmmm....

I would chop finely and then saute the kale in olive oil and soy sauce with some seeds or nuts or something-pine nuts ideal but I reckon pumplin seeds or sunflower seeds or peanuts would also work. Also throw in some slices of ginger and slices, must be slices of garlic. And tofu. Actualy the tofu should go in first And some cherry tomatoes would be lovely.

I'd serve with home made pasta actually-big wide sheets of lasange like stuff-but I can only make egg pasta-you're vegan, yes?

Also I think I'd put some apples, in two, finely sliced.

Oooh, soba noodles would be nice here.

(its not Kale Time at riverford, is it? please god, no. My compost heap always grows massivley around the Kale Time)

liath · 03/10/2006 16:32

This has just reminded me I've got tons of the stuff in the fridge from our veg box. Keep forgetting and it ends up on the compost here, too.

TooTickyTheAppleMuncher · 03/10/2006 16:34

The trick with kale is to use it straight away, while you (and it) are still enthusiastic. It';s lettuce I strugglewith... andJerusalem artichokes.

fennel · 03/10/2006 16:36

have just got to grips with all the kale in our veg box. something very like Fillyjonk's recipe. which was surprisingly yummy.

but what do I do with yellow squashes, also from the veg box? apart from make pumpkin-like masks out of them.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 03/10/2006 16:39

pumpkin soup

pumpkin muffins

roast pumpkin

the key with pumpkin i find is to add maple syrup, or sugar, so as to disguise the flavour

ProfYaffle · 03/10/2006 16:40

I like this with any green/leafy/cabbagey vegetable:

stir fry kale with onion and garlic, add pitted kalamata olives and pasta, stir in pesto, serve with parmasan. Yum. Also nice with halloumi.

liath · 03/10/2006 16:40

I've just turned my yellow squash into soup.

TooTickyTheAppleMuncher · 03/10/2006 16:44

Okay, what herbs?

OP posts:
TooTickyTheAppleMuncher · 03/10/2006 16:45

For my kalecreation, that is.
Filly, have you tried caraway seedswith pumpkin?

OP posts:
CreepyCrawlyCarmenere · 03/10/2006 16:58

I would use the kale in a spicy sausage and bean and pasta stew.
Sautee onion and garlic, add sliced sausages(I use quorn as I live with veggies)brown them. Add a tin of tomatoes, some veg stock, some oregano, thyme and rosemary and a pinch of sugar. Add some small pasta shapes I usually use penne or fusilli and leave to cook, add kale five minutes before it is finished cooking. season with salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper and serve with garlic bread and loads of fresh parmesan.

this is some class of traditional Italian dish but I cant remember the name.

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 03/10/2006 17:09

I have not

are they delicious?

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 03/10/2006 17:10

am thinking lemon and pumpkin, ginger and pumpkin, chilli and pumpkin and chocolate with pumpkin might all be goers

hmm...liquourish/fennel and pumpkin...

brimfull · 03/10/2006 17:22

dh does a lovely pasta dish with kale in it.It's got a creany sauce with bacon bits and kale. It's delicious

FillyjonkthePumpkinEater · 03/10/2006 17:28

there is a certain pig meat + kale theme here, is there not?

Have I just say kale and garlic/ginger/chilli marinated tofu is yummy. Go tofu!

TooTickyTheAppleMuncher · 03/10/2006 18:16

I'm a tofu fan too but it goes very quickly in this house.
Yes, caraway and pumpkin are yum, especially in a warm, velvety soup...mmmmmmmmm
So, what did I do with my kale? I fried onions, garlicand kale forawhilewith a few pine nuts, basil, oregano and fresh rosemary, added flourandsoya milk, let it thicken a bit then whizzed itwith a raw apple. Tastesyummy! About to servewith organicwholemeal fusili

These kale recipes are good, I'll print out the thread.

Kale must go well in curries I'd have thought too. a bit like spinach does.

but yellow squash soup? really?
