We have a p/t nanny who is brilliant in many was us but, by her own admission, is a pretty dreadful cook. Things are further complicated by the fact that we share her with another family and she has to accommodate various conflicting likes and dislikes. As a result she's fallen into a rut that largely consists of fish fingers or pasta. I want to give her a nudge towards a wider variety of foods but know that she won't cook, say, a chicken casserole from scratch but might make one if it was just a case of cobbling together a few ingredients and using some kind of spice mix. I've bought a sausage and bean casserole mix to try but wondered if anyone can recommend any others? I've never used any before, for no other reason than I enjoy cooking and prefer to do it from scratch, so it would be good to get some tried and tested suggestions.

In many ways.

I like the chicken casserole mix, and also the sausage casserole one. They are pretty easy too.

The beef bourguignon one is pretty terrible, more like bland stew. You get far better results with a stock cube and some beef, onions and carrots in a slow cooker.

Thanks both of you. Good to know which ones to avoid as well.

I noticed that there were some mixes specifically for the slow cooker too. Does anyone know if they're any good?

I prefer the Colman's mixes. DP and I pretty much lived on them during our first winter living together because back then I couldn't cook for toffee. The sausage casserole is lovely and I still do it now occasionaly when I'm feeling lazy. The lamb casserole is nice too, as is the chilli con carne mix (not the hot one!)

Never liked the Schwartz ones.

So you're a connoisseur Betty! Brilliant. Will investigate the Coleman's ones.

I've used the Schwartz ones in my slow cooker, both traditional and slow cooker ones (I adjusted the ingredients/liquid volume for the traditional ones). They all work ok. I particularly liked the slow cooker beef and ale stew mix. Agree though, can be just as easy to whack in a stock cube with the main ingredients (meat, veg and some form of liquid/tomatoes etc). HTH

Right, we're having chilli con carne courtesy of Coleman's this evening. I'm off this week so am going to try some out on the kids and see what they're like. Then if they like them I'll get some in for her to have a go with. I want it to be a success for her so she feels motivated to try some new things.

Maggi bag chicken is quite nice, produces chicken in a sauce which we have with rice or potatoes and very. I normally get the paprika one.

It's in a yellow packet in the spice section.
