Sweet ^and^ spicy

Ok, I really want sweet things with chilli in. Much as I love the Montezuma's dried mango with white chocolate, lime and chilli, I think I'd like to be having healthier versions of this flavour. I plan to try chopping up fruit/veg, and having lime chilli and salt with it. What else can I do that's sweet and spicy?

I cook this fish recipe using salmon fillets but you could also use cod, haddock, hake, etc.

For two people:

Peel and cut 300g carrots into thin matchstick strips. Put in a saucepan with a knob of butter, the zest and juice of one orange and 1/2 tsp ground coriander seeds. Add some water to just below the surface of the carrots and cook uncovered over a high heat until the liquid has evaporated and the carrots are tender. Season with salt and pepper and divide the carrots between two sheets of kitchen foil.

Place a fillet of fish on each pile of carrots and scatter with chopped spring onion, grated fresh ginger, chopped fresh coriander and finely chopped green chilli (optional). Put a couple of slices of fresh orange on top and a knob of butter. Fold over the foil and tightly roll the edges to make a parcel a la Jamie Oliver.

Put on a baking tray in a preheated oven (200) for 20-25 minutes.

We have this with new potatoes. It has quite a sweet taste because of the oranges but if you use the chilli it counteracts it so not too sickly. Btw I used Waitrose's Cooks Ingredients ready chopped ginger and chilli (ie out of a jar!) as I didn't have fresh and it was fine.

dont know if this is what you mean but
butternut squash and feta rosti are nice
Grate butternut and saute with lots of red chilli and onion a pinch of cumin when its soft crumble in some feta, you can then shape it into small rosti or keep as one big one cook on one side till crisp then flip over or grill the other side, serve with salad and tabasco. The combination of sweet , hot and sour is really nice

These are all good ideas - Papillon, I went through a recentish phase of practically living on that salad (while in Canada). It's exactly what I want, spicy, sour, sweet, the whole deal. I don't know anything about papaya, though - is green unripe? What does a papaya look like? Must look into it. Is there a similar salad with mango?

Oh, and I was looking for new ways to do fish in parcels - I really prefer cooking fish in parcels, thanks to lack of mess, relaxed cooking time, etc.

And I have a giant butternut squash in the kitchen. I was going to make cake with it, but had been wavering ...

Funny you should post this as I have just made a delicious vegetable curry with butternut squash, sweet potato, red lentils, chillies and fresh mango. It is really good in a sweet and spicy way.

Qesadillas with a mango, red onion, red chilli and coriander salsa.

I'm sure I've got a recipe somewhere for icecream with chilli sauce - will see if I can find.

Also, doesn't Nigella do a chocolate pud with chilli in?

DeadCocoPapscanScream · 04/10/2006 06:29
