Just bought a big jar, as supposed to be a good source of iron.
Today I had a spoonful on porridge, with a sliced banana and some mixed seeds - was lovely.
What else can I do with them, please?

Is it liquid or granular? If the liquid type then you can use it wherever you might have used honey/golden syrup/treacle, if granular use it in place of brown sugars. They are great for baking with.

It's great in flapjack - I tend to to sub half the golden syrup for treacle, it's a much more interesting flavour. Also required for christmas cake and christmas pudding if you're making anything like that.
It's wonderful in ginger cake, I have a River Cottage recipe for an immense sticky ginger cake which I can share if that appeals?

I also like to mix up seeds, flaked almonds, chopped brazils and whole almonds with oats and a sliced banana and drizzle it with treacle/molasses at breakfast. Dry but sticky muesli I suppose! I also have it on porridge.

To be honest I can happily eat it off the spoon, I love the flavour.

It's liquid. Don't really want to make a load of puddings/cakes, as I don't want loads of extra calories. I could try some vaguely healthy flapjacks though, maybe with seeds and dried apricots?

I don't mind the flavour - but don't like it enough to just eat by the spoonful. :)

It's also pretty good in salad dressings, don't have a recipe to hand but I'm sure Google can help Smile

Both light and dark molasses is good in black coffee, especially Chicory coffee. Especially if you add a tot of rum. Light molasses can be good in tea, as long as it's a strong brew & not a 'flavoured' tea. Don't add milk. Molasses and butter on grits, yum. And stay away from blackstrap!

It's good as a marinade for grilled and BBQ food and it makes a nice crispy skin. Think pork ribs.

Veggie, hmmm. It's good with sweet potatoes/yams. Brush lightly and bake. Dot with butter if you like. Slice and grill, brush just before done. Drizzle sparingly on just about any root veggies (except potatoes) or certain squash varieties (veggie, not drink) & bake or grill. If you want, sprinkle a little sea salt on the veggies to balance the sweet/salty.

Not healthy at all, but bake a shoo-fly pie or a pecan pie. I use macadamias instead of pecans.

Made Boston baked beans (minus the meat) today to have with jacket potatoes, very nice and very easy.

We used cooked from dried and then frozen beans.

Basic idea was saute 2-3 sliced onions with s&P, add half a bulb of crushed garlic, saute a bit more.
Add tsp colmans mustard powder, couple of tbsp Worcestershire sauce (or similar vege alternative - henderson's relish?), 2 tbsp treacle/molasses, one tin liquidised tomatoes, squirt tom puree, splash tabasco, vege stock cube, a bit of boiling water.
Cover then cook at 150C for about 2 hours, check half way through incase you need to add liquid or remove lid to drive a bit off.

I seem to recall you not being keen on tomatoes Remus, in which case I would be tempted to switch for lager/ale/stock to make up the liquid and just the squirt of tom puree.

Recipe called for a couple of tbsp brown sugar too, but it was plenty sweet enough without IMO. I planned on tasting half way through and adding sugar if necessary but definitely not for me!

I forgot the key bit - when adding all the condiments/liquid etc... ADD THE BEANS!

Haricot are the classic, but we used a mix of cannellini and borlotti which was nice. I would use a mix again, it looked prettier.
Think we did the equiv of 2.5 cans of beans for 4 people.

Thanks, Tea. I'm definitely going to try a non-tomatoey version of the beans v soon, maybe to have alongside a leek and gruyere quiche and some homemade wedges.
