OK I'm 11 weeks pregnant and although I've not been sick at all I have been drifting off into eating all sorts of crap, including too much fat and not enough vegetables.

I want to tackle this partly by getting into making awesome sandwiches at home as often as possible, so please could you all give me your delicious ideas for sandwiches to inspire me?

I am also trying to control my calorie intake so low-cal options would be good, but I adore cheese and will be giving up cake so can spare a few calories out of my daily budget for a really good hi-cal affair occasionally, good nutrition is the most important factor really. Not for packed lunches so it doesn't need to be keepable or transportable at all, I will be scoffing it straight away.

I'm currently eating lots of ham sandwiches which consist of cheap ham, low cal mayo, wholemeal bread, plenty of mustard and slices of cucumber.

I think there should be something nice based on beef slices and cheese and pickles but can't quite think what cheese to use.

I'm sure you can do better, please inspire me!

not to your specification.... but marmite and chocolate spread is DIVINE!

catsofa · 12/10/2014 00:41

P.S. I'm not craving anything in particular I just seem to want to eat anything I see, so tasty looking sandwich pictures to illustrate would also be most inspiring if you can be bothered!

Should I buy a toastie maker, or can you effectively do nice toasties under a grill?

M-marmite and chocolate spread? Seriously?!? OK... I saw a cheesecake thing the other day with some sort of salted chocolate, so I guess it works. I am both frightened and intrigued. What sort of chocolate spread?

Bacon, Brie, mango, salad

BlameItOnTheBogey · 12/10/2014 00:52

In a toasted sandwich maker: marmite, cheese and a spoonful of beans. Butter the outside of the bread. It's a bugger to make but oh so worth it.

icanhaveadarksideifyouwantmeto · 12/10/2014 00:59

any choc spread....any bread but only the original marmite

catsofa · 12/10/2014 01:00

Awwww, I love brie and I'm not supposed to have it while pregnant Sad. God I bet it's lovely with mango.

Just reminded me of a festival where I had a pancake thing with bacon, brie and redcurrant jelly in it, was the best thing I'd eaten for years!

If I get a toastie maker will I just eat melted cheese all day and nothing else? Is it a slippery slope?

Eek does fake marmite even exist? Is it vile?

Hang on a minute...

...I think I'm supposed to avoid brie because of the listeria risk. But if I cook it then it's fine as that would kill off any bacteria, so maybe I could do a version of the bacon/brie/redcurrant jelly thing?

The Aussies have a dreadful inferior fake product that for some bizarre reason they keep on eating in defiance of all logic or reason.

Philadelphia, rocket and chorizo is nice. Can you eat Philadelphia though? I can't remember as it's years since I was pregnant.

cruikshank · 12/10/2014 01:11

If you're going to go down the brie route, then mango chutney will do in the absence of fresh mango.

HoneyDragonMumshnet · 12/10/2014 01:14

You can have Brie as long as you but pasteurised

goodasitgets · 12/10/2014 01:14

Bagel (toasted or not, the sesame seed ones are good)
Pastrami or some form of spiced beef
Pickles/gherkins
Mustard (if you can get Coney Island mustard it's amazing) or mustard and mayo

I ate this for lunch for about a month GrinGrin

cruikshank · 12/10/2014 01:14

Lime pickle and cheddar is also nice in a toastie.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 12/10/2014 01:19

Goats cheese & beetroot.

catsofa · 12/10/2014 01:48

I actually have some home made mango chutney somewhere. What brand of Brie is pasteurised, any idea? If I can get it pasteurised I'll eat it all the time.

These are great, please keep them coming!

Pretty sure Philadelphia will be pasteurised, but chorizo is off limits unless cooked, which is a nightmare as it's one of my favourite things.

Lincoln High Roller
On tiger baguette.
Cranberry sauce, turkey, chorizo, lettuce, jarlsberg, peanut butter.

It's tip top.

justcallmethefixer · 12/10/2014 15:28

Humous and roasted vegetables, I like this in a wrap, but can work in s sandwich if the bread is not too soft.

Club sandwich!

You can make it healthier by using wholemeal bread, omitting the mayo or using a light version, and cook the egg through if youre pregnant!

Thin white bread toasted and crusts cut off layered with garlic mayo, baby gem lettuce (or baby leaf spinach is good), sliced beef tomatoes, shredded roast chicken or thinly sliced grilled chicken breast, fried egg, crispy bacon. Get about three layers going - fabulous brunch!

flipflopsandcottonsocks · 12/10/2014 16:24

Bratwurst sausage, sliced gherkins and mayonnaise. So yum!!

TyneTeas · 12/10/2014 17:01

You don't need a toasted sarnie maker to make lovely crunchy toasties

You can lightly butter the outside and do them under the grill, in a george forman type grill or even in a frying pan

My favourite toasted sarnies are ham cheese and reggae sauce, or cream cheese with spring onions

Wrap or pita with avocado, garlic and herb phili, lettuce, cucumber and tomato and plenty of black pepper is my favourite
