bicarbonate of soda: ingredients: bicarbonate of soda
baking powder: ingredients: wheat flour, disodium diphosphate (raising agent), sodium hydrogen carbonate (aka bicarbonate of soda)

Gingerbear · 28/09/2006 22:08

Baking Powder:
To use plain flour as a replacement for self raising, add 4 level tsps to 225g flour.

baking soda = bicarbonate of soda. You can make baking powder with bicarb plus cream of tartar in some quantity I can't remember.

moondog · 28/09/2006 22:10

Aye but still no clearer.
Will just go for all baking powder I think.

Bicarb: to make a simple baking powder, mix 1 part bicarb to 2 parts cream of tartar (don't ask me about cream of tartar, not got that in baking cupboard)

SoupDragon · 28/09/2006 22:12

If the recipe says baking soda, it means bicarb of soda.

SoupDragon · 28/09/2006 22:12

Bakibng powder has baking soda plus other stuff.

moondog · 28/09/2006 22:12

I feel all faint....

SoupDragon · 28/09/2006 22:13

Baking poweder is the same as Bakibng powder

SoupDragon · 28/09/2006 22:13

Oh FFS, I'm turning into Cod.

Gingerbear · 28/09/2006 22:14

bicard is alkali, and will leave a bitterness in the taste of the baking unless counteracted by acidic substance.
hence baking powder is bicarb plus tartaric acid (cream of tartar or potassium bitartrate)
How I love kitchen chemistry.

Gingerbear · 28/09/2006 22:16

if american recipe requires baking soda - use bicarb.
if baking powder, use erm, baking powder

Gingerbear · 28/09/2006 22:16

too many cooks methinks.

moondog · 28/09/2006 22:17

Tartaric acid being Cream of Tartar right?

Thus baking powder is Bicarb plus Cream of T?? Yes????

OP posts:
SoupDragon · 28/09/2006 22:21

Baking powder is sodium bicarb plus something else. It can be cream of tartar.

Gingerbear · 28/09/2006 22:31

agree with soupy.
c'mon Moondog, you'll be cooking at midnight at this rate.
