Mine is usually made in mid to late December.

ComeOVeneer · 28/09/2006 16:29

Def. not too soon. Besides you need many many weeks to douse (sp) it in alcohol before christmas .

Cappuccino · 28/09/2006 16:33

lol at old biddy cake

that'll have sherry in it then

GeorginaA · 28/09/2006 16:35

According to Delia, ideal time is end of Oct so I've diaried for then

Alibaldi · 28/09/2006 16:43

Remember to feed them though . That's the secret of a good cake.

MamaGlamourPuss · 28/09/2006 16:43

feed them????

Oh God, I'm off to Tescos. Unless somebody wants to post me a link pretty please - and explain feeding!

Feed them with alcohol (makes them lovely and moist).

Alibaldi · 28/09/2006 16:45

Thanks COV. Good tablespoon every other week of brandy makes for a wonderful moist cake by Xmas.

biglips · 28/09/2006 16:45

Agree with Georgina and Delia - half term week is when I make mine.

hollyhobbie · 28/09/2006 18:10

I normally make mine in November. Can't even think of Christmas beofre then...

Lilymaid · 28/09/2006 20:24

Not before half term week. Delia's recipe is good and on her website you can find how to scale it up our down depending on the size of your cake tin.

MamaGlamourPuss · 28/09/2006 20:39

Thanks for that, I've saved it in my favourites and I'll do it in half term.

Bloody DH just said "I'm sick of your baking"

ungrateful FUCKER!!!!!

Thanks for the link Lilymaid - have decided to make my own pud and cake this year (there could be tears on Christmas day believe me!)

rustybear · 30/09/2006 09:40

Traditionally they should be made the day after 'Stir-Up Sunday',the Sunday before advent, when the collect for the day is "Stir-up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."
