Can I make my own pot noodle for lunch at work?

As in, can I put something together in a tub, take it to work and then add boiling water and several minutes later, have something healthy and warm to eat?

Will any sort of noodles cook in boiling water from a kettle? Or do they really need to be done in a saucepan?

And how might I flavour it? thinking of a bit of stock cube but that's a bit salty.

I'm thinking I could just add a load of beansprouts and thinly sliced pepper for instance. Which don't really need cooking.

What do you think?

The Kilmer jars look pretty but not v practical for taking to work - so heavy!

I sometimes take a sachet of Ainsley harriots med veg cous cous in a nice round tupawear thing with chopped up chorizo and half a chopped up jarred roasted pepper. At lunch time pour in some boiling water and it's ready in 5 mins. Sometimes put in frozen edame beans in the morning too instead of pepper.

Whois I agree but I don't like putting boiling water on plastic because of chemicals leaking into the food....so I assume that's why they chose glass. Many people don't like boiling water on plastic for this reason.

Even the BPA free stuff?

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 05/10/2014 21:26

Well I suppose not but I've never seen BPA free plastic tubs? Are there some out there?

Also check out the 'foreign' aisle at your supermarket. If there is a big Chinese section you can often pick up sachets of soup flavouring which you could use.

Hmm. I personally don't like buying Chinese made foods...not processed things. Not since there was a recall on some poisonous soy sauce which I had in my cupboard from China Town! I am slightly weird though I will say.

Yup plenty branded BPA free - some nice ones in Robert days anyway. Google seems to pull up lots of 'are boa free plastics still safe?' Links tho...

MrsPnut · 05/10/2014 21:37

The sistema stuff is BPA free.

If you didn't mind making up something rash day you could probably make a pot noodle style flavour sachet thing yourself.

Chuck in some sesame oil, soy sauce, five spice and garlic powder or whatever you fancy into a little pot and tip in wth your chicken and veg when you make it?

Yes...I wonder if one of those Chinese Herb mixes would work? You know the ones which are a basic mix of aniseed and ginger etc and they're powdered?

Don't see why not - would probably work really well.

I used to make a vege variation of these too, worked brilliantly as a work lunch

I've made some based on these too. The sachets of guacamole in Costco have the nicest taste of ready made stuff I've found.

Fizzyplonk I've made freezer burritos before, they were yummy, but I made breakfast ones which had scrambled egg in and they reheated in a different way to the rest of the burrito. Piping hot filling, then still frozen egg.

MaryMotherOfCheeses I have had a DIY pot noodle today and yesterday for lunch.
Scruched up rice noodles to break them up so I wouldn't have slurping proiblems. Red pepper, grated carrot, chopped up mushrooms, spring onion and cooked chicken breast sliced up.

Yesterday I made it with this because they were on offer and it was HORRIBLE! That 'flavour pot' is unlike any thai flavour I have ever known.

Today I went back to basics with a chicken stock cube and its yummy.
