Is it possible to bake something genuinely tasty that is gluten and dairy free?

And if so, please can I have the recipe?
Half of my family seems to be on a gluten and dairy free mission at the moment. Good for them.
However, I've offered to host a tea party for my DM's birthday, and all the recipes I've tried so far with gluten-free flour (even when I increase the liquid) seem sort of 'wholesome' and, frankly, a bit unpalatable.
My sister-in-law made some chocolate brownies with avocado and soya milk, which didn't change my opinion about 'free from' baking, but did make me re-evaluate all those times before she said she'd liked my cakes!

I know I can make flapjacks, but is there a cake or some other sort of biscuit that genuinely tastes right without those delicious gut irritations?
All ideas gratefully received.

Yeah definitely. I have several friends with celiac disease/lactose intolerance and i've made loads of deLicious cakes for them. This is a good recipe, substitute margarine for butter and soya/lactofree/coconut milk and add an extra teaspoonor two if the mixture looks dry. For buttercream you can use margarine or make a delicious ganache with coconut milk instead of cream.

Meringues? You can buy soya whipping cream in health food shops.

Alternatively you could try a flour less cake that uses ground nuts instead.

I love my gf rosemary and sea salt crackers. They're made with ground pumpkin seeds and ground almonds. Recipe should be gogglable, but let me know if you need it typed out.

BeachyKeen · 04/10/2014 15:47

this clementine cake! cake
Once of the nicest things I have eaten, and I do do gf, or anything like it!
And so easy too

BeachyKeen · 04/10/2014 15:47

sorry, I mean I do not do gf Grin

EvilRingahBitch · 04/10/2014 15:50

Ground almonds are the key IMO. Either to make brownies or citrus based cakes, or both.

Branleuse · 04/10/2014 15:51

I reckon a good bakewell where its practically all ground almonds would be good for a GFDF makeover

CMOTDibbler · 04/10/2014 15:53

Tom Kerridges orange cake is gf/df by design and is fabulous.

I always bake gf (I'm not making something I can't eat) and often do df too, and my cakes are genuinely lovely.

I use Ms Cupcakes book for vegan and gf, and they are super tasty and not at all worthy

Bolshybookworm · 04/10/2014 15:55

This book is brilliant. Most of the recipes are dairy and gluten free (they use rice flour and vegetables instead). I've made a few and they've all been very tasty. Bought it for my G/D free friend and she loves it too!

Try The Intolerant Gourmet. She also has two recipe books.

We have to be gluten, dairy, egg and soya free (along with other various things). We eat really well, I promise you.

jaynebxl · 04/10/2014 16:02

Claudia Rodents orange and almond cake.

jaynebxl · 04/10/2014 16:05

Roden not rodent!

bonzo77 · 04/10/2014 16:14

Another one for claudia Roden's orange cake. She's worth a look actually as there are lots of kosher / Jewish recipes that are both flour and dairy free for Passover and meat meals. You can do a mean chocolate mouse with just eggs and dark chocolate, and I've got a potato flour recipe for chocolate cake make with oil instead of butter. For savoury food You can often use gram (chick pea) flour instead of normal, eg for thickening sauces.

bonzo77 · 04/10/2014 16:16

Chocolate mouse? mousse though mouse might be ok too....

Separate the eggs. Beat the whites to stiff peaks. Melt the choc. Allow choc to cool, mix in the yolks, then fold this into the eggs. Chill. 1 large egg and 1oz dark choc per person.

minkah · 04/10/2014 16:18

Ooh, lovely thread!

Clementine cake! Yum.

Love the sound of the Rosemary crackers too.

GF foods always get scoffed up in my house, everybody prefers them to glutenous ordinary stuff, they are lighter.

Am on phone, so can't link but Annie Bell's flourless apricot & almond cake (minus the creamy icing) is gorgeous. Almonds, eggs, cocoa, sugar, baking powder and apricots. Makes a sticky chocolate cake, doesn't taste apricoty at all.

A lot of french style cakes use ground alminfs

quirkychick · 04/10/2014 16:27

Phone playing up!

*A lot of french and continental style cakes use ground almonds or hazelnuts.

bluesky · 04/10/2014 16:29

I just do usual cake recipes and use doves farm flour instead and Pure sunflower spread instead of butter

gamescompendium · 04/10/2014 16:40

DS has a CMPA and an egg allergy. Luckily he can tolerate eggs in cakes because vegan cake recipes are pretty rubbish. As far as dairy free goes we tend to use our normal recipes but substitute diary free spread for the butter, coconut oil or milk are also generally very good alternative fat options. My uncle has coeliacs disease so puddings for him and DS are difficult. I avoid gluten free flour, it works in some recipes (makes tolerable gingerbread men) but is terrible in others (banana muffins were inedible) Nigella Lawson does a dairy and gluten free chocolate cake that lots of people like but I didn't like texture, too much like shop bought cake. the last cake I made for them both was this Spanish orange and almond cake which was good.

I have been known to make two puddings so DS can have normal flour and uncle can have dairy, it makes life easier.

gamescompendium · 04/10/2014 16:45

Depending if you like coconut a lot of dairy free icecream recipes are CMPA and coeliac friendly, try here for starters.

trixymalixy · 04/10/2014 17:05

Games, I make great vegan cakes.

this is the best Victoria sponge type recipe I've ever made

trixymalixy · 04/10/2014 17:07

this is the best vegan chocolate cake recipe I've made. You really can't tell it's not got eggs in.

VikingLady · 04/10/2014 17:14

The best gf/DF cake I've had is Nigella's chocolate and almond cake. If you google it (stupid iPhone, I can't work out how to copy links) it comes up on loads if websites.

It is seriously luxurious! It uses ground almonds instead of flour so you don't get the powdery texture of gf flour. The mix does make a massive cake though, so you'll need to scale down the recipe if you don't have the right sized tin.

Honestly, the best chocolate cake I've ever had, gf or otherwise.
