can't afford it but do have some organic stuff when I think i can mange it

Donbean · 30/09/2006 17:11

expensive and doesnt last long, i meal plan and have to make stuff last the week. I would have to go out and buy stuff again and i absolutely HATE waste so it would traumatise me to throw stuff away...especially at that price.

jabberwocky · 30/09/2006 17:29

I buy some organics like milk (in the US you get a lot of icky stuff if not), eggs, lettuce, other veggies that are hard to wash or not a "peelable" type - although we grow our own in the summer. Other things if the budget allows. Unfortunately, things like a $3 bell pepper just don't work out for us.

Smurfgirl · 30/09/2006 17:40

Too expensive and i shop local and they don't do organic

Donbean · 30/09/2006 17:41

Hi smurfy

Flossam · 30/09/2006 17:42

again too bloody expensive!!!

MamaGlamourPuss · 30/09/2006 17:42

I'd much rather shop local than organic

OP posts:
Donbean · 30/09/2006 17:42

and hi Floss

Flossam · 30/09/2006 17:46

hello donbean! don't see you often round these parts - is it you or me awol or both! how are you?

blueshoes · 30/09/2006 18:05

organic = licence to rip-off. also, if go organic, no point in going organic for some foods and not for others - so why bother?

PcCOD · 30/09/2006 18:09

ditto
its poncetastic

nulnulcat · 30/09/2006 18:10

im not bothered whether my food is organic or not, dont really buy the organic stuff as its all seperate from anything else and i will just grab the first bag of potatoes or loaf of bread or whatever and dont even look where its is from most of the time

i have to check for e numbers but thats about it

TooTicky · 30/09/2006 18:11

Organic food isn't expensive as such - non-organic is unrealistically cheap.

merrily · 30/09/2006 18:13

Too expensive now we are living on one modest salary.

Also I agree with Donbean that it doesn't last long enough - I used to get an Abel & Cole box and had to make sure I used up the veg within three days otherwise it would go manky. So we would eat very well at the beginning of the week and the rest of the week would be store-cupboard meals and takeaways!!

RanToTheHills · 30/09/2006 18:20

if you can afford/can prioritise in order to be able to pay for organic, think you'd be mad not to!

albatros · 30/09/2006 18:34

I am organic for milk, eggs, butter and cheese but cannot afford organic veg.
I would love to be organic for everything but one word of warning is that organic producers still use chemicals - just naturally derived ones such as nicotene.
There were large grants available to farmers 4 years ago to become organic and many jumped on the bandwagon, some of these do not understand / care about the organic ethos and just want to maximise their profits, some off these will spray chemicals (organic ones) with no regard to wildlife health or human as long as it stays within legal limits

meowmix · 01/10/2006 09:46

we are in the UK - well in the main, esp for meat. fish and veg but out here in the middle east - no chance. There's one shelf in the supermarket with organic stuff on it and its organic cotton wool....

rustybear · 01/10/2006 17:26

Agree with fillyjonk about the title - it reminds me of the 'Organic Salt' I saw in one supermarket. Salt is inorganic - how can you make it organic?

handlemecarefully · 01/10/2006 17:29

"if you can afford/can prioritise in order to be able to pay for organic, think you'd be mad not to! "

well then, I'm mad not too

handlemecarefully · 01/10/2006 17:30

or 'to' even

iota · 01/10/2006 17:35

blueshoes you said "if go organic, no point in going organic for some foods and not for others - so why bother?"

I don't agree. I buy quite a lot of organic food, but also buy stuff that isn't when I can't get what I want in an organic version.

But buying 75% organic reduces the amount of pesticides that I eat by 75% and in the case of the animals, gives them a better life as they are not intensively reared.

So I do think it makes a difference to buy as much organic food as you can even if it's not 100%.

Organic is only one of the things that are important to me, so if I don't buy organic it tends to be because something else is more important. I have a ranking that goes:

Ideally local & organic
if not, then local
then fair trade and organic
then fair trade
then organic
then Greggs sausage roll

MamaGlamourPuss · 01/10/2006 23:29

shurrup taking the piss out of my title
