Hi
just wanted to know what others do as mine are always hungry!
I tend to give fruit/crackers/toast or something similar after school and main meal about 5.30 or 6
They have the odd biscuits or piece of cake as treats but not really very often
But they seem to find it hard to wait til 6ish!
They are under 6
What do people do for food after school?
Nd do your kids have milk before bedtime?

Cheese, grapes, Pepperami, raisins, fruit flakes, cereal bar, banana, crackers

Usually take a snack in my bag...mine need food the minute they step out of the school door

ilovepowerhoop · 30/09/2014 21:42

mine normally have crisps and then dinner at 5/5.30 (sometimes later). They don't have milk before bed

Hillfog · 30/09/2014 21:43

And yes, usually a cup of milk before bed (they are 4&6)

amyhamster · 30/09/2014 21:44

I think for that age 6pm is too late for dinner
I'd give a snack on the way home from school - couple of biscuits, fruit etc
Then dinner at 5pm
Mine still have milk before bed ( 8 and 10 ), half a mug ful

snowmummy · 30/09/2014 21:46

We have our dinner really early. 4.30/5ish. Snacks don't satisfy them unless I give them loads then dinner is ruined!

Bumblebzz · 30/09/2014 21:48

Breadsticks and houmous, yoghurt, a small sandwich, a sesame snap, a scone, etc. but I also struggle to vary it. My dd is RAVENOUS after school and will still eat a big dinner at 5pm/5:30pm. And she gets a cooked lunch at school.

SeattleGraceMercyDeath · 30/09/2014 21:50

Chocolate spread on toast. Crap mum alert!

myotherusernameisbetter · 30/09/2014 21:50

My 2 always had a yoghurt or probiotic drink and a cookie when home from school and then Dinner at 5ish. We never have pudding and instead they have something for supper with a glass of milk (or hot chocolate sometimes in the winter). Now 14 and 13 and both nearly 6 foot and they still have supper and milk before bed :o

Artandco · 30/09/2014 21:50

Just a banana usually at 3.30pm when out of school. We eat at 7pm.

They have a large breakfast ( porridge, nuts and fruit, plus a boiled egg), and lunch so never seem that hungry. Oh they have fruit mid morning at school also

aniseed123 · 30/09/2014 22:00

i,m making the dinner earlier and today it was 5.30 with milk at about 7
seemed to work better
just have to be organised and have dinner ready on time!
seattle.. dont worry about 'crap mother' we do what we have to do!
and yes variation is hard.
i tried garlic bread for tea and they seem to like that and keeps them going for a bit
Am going to try 'home made garlic bread' soon!
when time allows....

Mine used to eat at 430-5 as well, then fruit and maybe a biscuit before bed.

Now they're teens they are ravenous when they come in and often eat a sandwich, or rice cakes with peanut butter or hummus and pitta. or cake

Then dinner at 630-7.

My daughter has always had fruit, and then usually asks for something else - I tend to give her what she wants - cereal bar, nuts, crisps and chocolate are usually asked for. I'm quite flexible about what the other snack is as she always eats her tea, had a large portion of vegetables and isn't into puddings.

formerbabe · 01/10/2014 16:42

Dinner as soon as they are home as they are usually starving....I aim for one protein, one carb, one veg, then they have dessert which is fruit/yoghurt/ice cream/small cake.

If they are hungry towards bedtime they get crackers/bread sticks/banana with their milk.

TuTuTired · 03/10/2014 17:15

Mine have either toast with jam/peanut butter or yogurt & fruit when they come in at 3.30, then dinner between 5.30-6.30 depending on what we're having and whether we're eating with them.

WandaBenjamin · 03/10/2014 18:12

My DC is absolutely starving after school. I have found the easiest thing is to bring a sandwich (usually cheese). He'll usually share it with his sister so it's more like half or three quarters of a sandwich. I think it's probably the same calories as lots of little snacks and easier (and maybe cheaper) for me! Sometimes fruit or a fruit bar too. Sometimes icecream

He will still eat his supper, which is usually between 530 and 6.

Lovage · 05/10/2014 20:35

Usually cake (homemade), sometimes fruit, especially dried apple rings which they like a lot. Very occasionally savoury things, but they whinge and complain. I often carry nuts and seeds (for me) but they usually reject them out of hand as snacks, although happily eat them as part of meals. Kids are 8 and 6.

Might try sandwiches again, thanks for reminder. They do both like sandwiches.

jennymac · 09/10/2014 17:51

Usually crackers and cheese, or a scone or bagel when they arrive home from school. Then dinner about 5.45pm and supper (cereal or toast and milk) at 7.45pm.
