I have the fussiest 3 year old son.. He has always had an issue with textures.

I recently started offering him dinner, then he didn't eat it, there was nothing else to substitute (well I so told him but I would given I'm something small and nutritious before bed, bit there was no immediate replacement meal offered).

On my foods (we have stir fries etc he would gag, and I would make casserole s, sausages, fish all of which he would vomit with or just not eat it). So, I brought a whole range of Little people's plates, he liked the pictures... and guess what - I offered him no alternatives, and he eats them, loves them.

So eat eats, the little people's plates lasagne, chicken pie, lamb pie (as long as the potatoes are mashed, loves the fish pie, cottage pie and I have started added broccoli, peas and carrots to them and he eats it, as long as it's mashed.

It seems to be a texture issue though, he seems to like their melt in the mouth texture.

The only ones he doesn't like is the ravioli and he wasn't keen on the tagine.

So guys, how can I make these at home? My son has always loved soup so I thought maybe I could make some mash or sauce with loads of puree veg....

Any ideas? thank you all. I feel a guilty buying ready made meals for him - although it has made all our lives so much more easy!

Cottage pie is pretty easy. Fry off some good quality minced beef with finely chopped onion and diced carrot and give everything a long slow simmer in a little stock so that the texture softens. Thicken any juices with some cornflour. I'm guessing children-aimed ready-meals will be pretty bland so you'd only need to flavour the meat with a stock cube. Allow to cool and then pipe or spread some creamy mash on top. (If it's too hot, the mash tends to sink). Bake until browned on top.

For fish pie, gently poach your fish selection in some milk, strain off the milk and use to make a thick white sauce with some chopped parsley. Again, allow to cool before topping with mash and baking off.

BTW... if he struggles to eat food that isn't mashed or smooth, you might want to ask a GP to take a look at his ears/nose/throat.
