Those train-shaped moulds...

It's time for my annual overly-ambitious attempt at a childnren's birthday cake!

My DS is OBSESSED with trains and I meant to buy one of those Lakeland train cake tins (www.lakeland.co.uk/11521/The-Cake-Train) but they were discontinued, so I found a silicone one in Dunelm Mill.

Do you think you could make a cake in one, or is it only going to be good for jelly? And if so what type of sponge might work best?

I'm planning to knick the Jelly tot decorations idea so it doesn't have to be iced.

Failing that, I'm going to need some awesome easy Gruffalo cake ideas quick!

Lakeland have got lots of silicone cake pans these days, so I don't see why it shouldn't work...please post a photo when it's done Grin

I made this for DS without a mould and it was amazing! www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/train-cake/5685f320-1e5c-4ebb-b2cd-1ab73633b016

I have that in silicone - ds3 is a train nut. I'm a pretty decent baker these days but half of the cake wouldn't come out of the details like the coal, sorry!

Thank you all... and bugger!
What sort of mix were you using impatience? did you use that Cake Release stuff I keep hearing about? (but have never tried)

I made a train cake for my son's christening. I made a round cake and ice it in blue and green 'hills' round the side. I used a stencil for the train and sweetie laces and Cadbury finger biscuits for the track. The design was in one of the issues of cake decorating magazine and was easy to do.

I've tried silicone cake moulds for heart-shaped cakes and have never been able to get it out properly so I think a details mould would be near impossible.

Amazon have some train cake tin moulds from about £15. I can't link on my phone but I just searched for train cake tin and quite a few came up including a 3d train and a Thomas the Tank Engine tin.
